JAMESTOWN — A coach’s job, among a myriad of responsibilities, is to find even the smallest mistakes in order to make his or her team as good as it can possibly be for its next outing

For Eric Haglund, he’ll have trouble locating any miscues following Frewsburg’s 11-0 five-inning victory over Brocton in a Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 baseball game Monday at Diethrick Park.

“Ever since we left Myrtle Bearch (where they played in a tournament during spring break), we’ve just been trying to get better and better and do the best we can with what we’ve got,” the Bears coach said. “We’ve been battling the weather, the kids are working well together and doing the best they can.”

Garrett Brink allowed a pair of singles, struck out six and issued just one walk; and Daniel Peterson went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs, helping the Bears to improve to 11-2 overall and 8-0 in the division.

Frewsburg, which collected 10 hits, scored a run in the second inning on Peterson’s RBI single; tallied four in the third, highlighted by run-scoring singles from Payton Dustin, Vincent Sanfilippo and Peterson; and six in the fifth, keyed by a pair of two-run singles by Mason Eckman and Peterson.

“They were good, they were solid,” Brocton coach Robert Fetterick said of the Bears. “We’re young and we’re tired. We just went three days in a row last week. We had an emotional win over Clymer/Sherman/Panama on Thursday. … With young kids, it takes a lot to keep coming back. We need a day of practice to reset and we don’t have that. We have (Frewsburg) again (today). … This the growth, this is where you get stronger, get better, develop yourself and you start realizing what it takes to be a ballplayer if you want to be successful every day.”

Grant Gustafson took the loss for the Bulldogs (6-4, 4-4). Kadin Ehmke had a first-inning single and Damion Franklin singled in the fourth for Brocton’s two hits off Brink.

“They played a flawless game,” Fetterick said. “Brink did his job, they put the ball in play and mistakes hurt us.”

Meanwhile, the Bears played errorless defense, highlighted by a brilliant throw from shallow right field by second baseman Maddox Sheesley to third baseman Draven DeJesus, who tagged out Ehmke on a bang-bang play.

Bob Schmitt, Frewsburg’s former coach who won three state championships in the 1990s, watched it all from the grandstand.

“I had the boys shake his hand,” said Haglund, who played for Schmitt. “He built the tradition.”

NOTES: Chase Haglund had two hits, including a double, for the Bears.
