Hillbillies hold on for 8-5 win over Jamestown at Diethrick Park

JAMESTOWN — Fredonia sent 10 batters to the plate in the second inning of Saturday night’s Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 baseball game against Jamestown at Diethrick Park.
As it turned out, the Hillbillies needed that big rally.
Owen Rush crushed a two-run double, Ashton Putney and Nathan Sercu added an RBI single apiece, and Andrew Cowan delivered a sacrifice fly to highlight the seven-run uprising that also included four walks and a hit batter.
Armed with an eight-run lead, the Hillbillies went on to down the Red Raiders 8-5.
The win improved Fredonia’s record to 8-4 overall and 8-4 in the division, while Jamestown fell to 4-9 and 4-8

Rush was the winning pitcher, working four innings, striking out six, walking five and surrendering two earned runs. Putney, who came on in relief, gave up three hits — one a solo home run to Brandon Lobb in the seventh inning — and struck out six over the final three frames. Offensively, Rush and Sercu both finished with three hits and two RBIs to lead a 10-hit attack.
Losing pitcher Colin Melendez drilled a two-run double and Mikey Patric, who collected a pair of singles, had a run-scoring base hit in the Red Raiders’ four-run fourth inning. Lobb provided Jamestown’s final run in the top of the seventh when he cleared the wall in left field. Antonie Rodriguez relieved Melendez, working 5.1 innings, striking out two, walking three and hitting a batter.
RUSSO PITCHES GEM
WESTFIELD — Westfield scored three runs in the first inning and that’s all it needed as the Wolverines shut out Brocton 5-0 in a Division 2 game.
Carter Russo tossed a two-hit complete game, featuring 13 strikeouts and one walk.
Offensively, Aaron Fuller smacked two hits and drove in a pair of runs, while Mason Baum, Chris Vacanti and Danny Bratton added an RBI apiece.
For the Bulldogs, Aiden Gatto took the loss after allowing six hits and five walks. He struck out seven.
Westfield is now 4-7 overall and 3-7 in the division. Brocton is 6-7 and 4-7.
EAGLES FALL
FRANKLINVILLE — Franklinville scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to post a 9-8 victory over Ellicottville in a Division 3 game.
Isaac Town smacked two doubles; Beau Bielecki (triple) drove in two runs; N. Shenk added a double and three RBIs; and Brady Tatlow had a single and drove in a run for the winners (6-8, 6-6).
Gian Nuzzo drilled a home run and drove in four runs for the Eagles (5-10, 4-8), while teammate CaedonWyatt had a base hit and two RBIs.
Matthew Spittler worked the final three innings to earn the victory. Nuzzo took the loss in relief.
BEARS ROLL COUGARS
FREWSBURG — Garrett Brink went 3 for 4 with two runs scored to lead Frewsburg to a 13-5 Division 2 win over Cassadaga Valley on Saturday at the Frewsburg Sports Complex.
Daniel Peterson was 2 for 4 with two runs scored; Mason Eckman singled, drove in a run and scored three runs; Draven DeJesus singled and drove in two runs; and Chase Haglund tripled, drove in two runs and scored twice for the Bears (15-2, 12-0).
Vincent Sanfilippo threw four innings of one-hit ball, striking out five for Frewsburg.
Bradley Windnagle had two hits while Braden LeBaron and Tyler Bourqoin each had a hit for the Cougars (4-11, 2-10).
HUSKIES HOLD ON AGAINST TROJANS
LAKEWOOD — Olean went up 7-1 after three innings and beat Southwestern 10-6 in Division 1 action at Packard Field.
Dustin Hendrix went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored; Pete Conley had two hits, including a double, two RBIs and two runs scored; and Lucas Gilbert went 2 for 3 with two runs scored for the Trojans (7-7, 6-6).
Thomas Bates hit a home run and Cal Vogtli doubled for the Huskies (5-10, 4-8).
