Dunkirk falls to Falconer 45-39 in nonleague game

FALCONER — Haley Holmberg scored on a putback midway through the fourth quarter and Nazariah Neal hit a 3-pointer late in the game as Falconer held off nonleague Dunkirk 45-39 in girls basketball Thursday.

The Golden Falcons (2-4) led 34-31 entering the final eight minutes and Augustine Krenzer helped put the game away by going 4 for 4 at the free-throw line down the stretch.

On Monday, Dunkirk beat Falconer 46-30 at Dunkirk High School.

The Golden Falcons led 14-5 after the first quarter Thursday as Ashley Smith had 6 points and Ellyson Baglia had 4 during the opening period.

The Marauders (4-1) stormed back by outscoring the hosts 26-20 in the middle two quarters. Shyla Karin jump-started that run with a pair of 3-pointers during the second quarter.

Krenzer led Falconer with 11 points to go along with three steals; Baglia had 9 points, seven rebounds and two steals; Smith had 8 points and 12 rebounds; and Kamryn Harper and Neal each picked up three steals.

Karin led Dunkirk with 16 points, while Molly DiCara had 8 points and 10 assists.
