Pomfret’s Vento gets master clerk title

By M.J. STAFFORD mstafford@observertoday.com Pomfret town Clerk Alison Vento is one of only 22 municipal clerks in the state to receive a Master Municpal Clerk (MMC) designation from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC). Vento was recognized by the Pomfret Town Board at its regular September meeting for achieving the honor. According to the IIMC website, “The MMC program is the second and more advanced of the two professional designations granted by IIMC. The MMC program is an advanced continuing education program that prepares participants to perform complex municipal duties. The program has an extensive and rigorous educational component and a professional contribution component. The MMC applicant must demonstrate that they have actively pursued education and professional activities.” Vento said it took her about three years to finish the program. “It’s more about contributions to the state clerks association and the county clerks association,” she said. “There was a lot of personal and professional development. It was based on leadership skills.” The website states that IIMC has more than 14,500 members, mostly in the United States. There are a total of 1,367 Master Municipal Clerks worldwide, with 1,338 of them in the U.S. Vento started working in the Pomfret town office in 2009 as a deputy clerk. She was appointed to fill the vacant clerk’s position in 2013 and has since been elected in her own right, with her re-election this November all but certain, as she is running unopposed. She has served as vice president and president of the Chautauqua County Municipal Clerks Association. Vento is currently membership chair of the New York State Town Clerks Association.
