The Bells Market on East Fourth Street in Dunkirk along with the Freshmart Store in Fredonia, have been purchased by the Penn Traffic Co. of Johnstown, Pa., and will become Quality Markets within the next two days. Thirty years ago — 1993 Bridget Henderson showed a knack for basketball as early as the fifth grade. That’s when the Dunkirk native won a hoop shot contest sponsored by the local Elks Club. The rest is history. Today, Bridget is a sophomore at St. John Fisher College in suburban Rochester, where she plays guard for one of the country’s most successful basketball programs. Thirty years ago — 1992 Ronald “Pudge” Miller, Fredonia-based station commander and sergeant with the New York State Police, is retiring this January after a 31-year career. Stationed at Fredonia’s “Troop A” for the past 10 years, he has worked at several other troops throughout the state, including Auburn, Clarence, Batavia, Falconer, Leeds and Allegany. He joined the State Police in 1962 and by 1968, he was named sergeant. Thirty years ago — 1992 Student of the Week is Richard Walker, a senior at Fredonia Central School and the son of Richard A. Walker of Forestville and Linda Walker of Fredonia. He ranks second in his class. Active in Student Council, he has the distinction of being the school’s only incumbent council president ever to be re-elected. Richard also works for his grandparents and Walker’s Fruit Basket. He plans to one day earn a degree in law.
