Thirty years ago — 1992 Hyman Zeplowitz of Dunkirk has been designated a Melvin Jones Fellow by Lions Clubs International Foundation in recognition of his commitment to serving the world community. Named for the founder of Lions Club International, the Fellowship is the foundation’s highest honor. Mr. Zeplowitz was recently honored as a 50- year member of the Dunkirk-Fredonia Lions Club. Thirty years ago — 1992 Strong winds with gusts up to 69 mph at the Chautauqua Airport/Dunkirk were responsible for much damage in the lakeshore area recently. One of the hardest hit was the new Kmart project on Vineyard Drive. The north wall blew in and the south wall caved in later in the day. A silo on the Howard H. Ferry farm on Route 60 in the town of Pomfret also was toppled by strong winds. Thirty years ago — 1992 A movie made in Dunkirk in September by two local residents will premier on Dunkirk’s local cable access Channel 12. Entitled “Stalemate,” the movie was written and produced by Justin Skubis and Chuck Reed. The film is based on their play, “A Different Person,” which was staged in May at Dunkirk High School. The plot centers around twin brothers separated at birth. The movie was shot at various locations in the Dunkirk area, including the Sheraton Harborfront Inn and along Central Avenue. Thirty years ago — 1992 Notice that the erection of a $4,400 sign on the front lawn of the Lakeshore Assembly of God Church on West Main Street in Westfield is in violation of the village ordinances brought the bulk of the church’s congregation and the Rev. Thirty years ago — 1992 A slice of a famous town of Hanover tree will find its way home soon due to the efforts of a local historian. Hanover Historian Vincent Martonis announced recently that a large horizontal slice of a tree known as the Hanover Elm or the “Knapp Elm” will be returned to the township where it grew. It has been kept in the Cattaraugus County Museum in Little Valley on loan. Before the tree fell in 1940, it had stood for an estimated 450 years and was 165 feet high and 14 feet wide.
