Veteran, poet to visit SUNY this month

Mary Louise White Visiting Writer Dr. Hugh Martin will offer talks and readings at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

Public talks and readings with the Iraq War veteran, currently an Assistant Professor of English at the United States Air Force Academy, will be held on Thursday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m., in the Blue Lounge in Williams Center Room G138, and on Friday, Nov. 10 at noon, at the Veterans Lounge in Nixon Hall. He will also offer a craft talk on Thursday at 4 p.m. in Fenton Hall Room 105.

The events are free and the public is invited to attend.

Martin is the author of “In Country” (BOA Editions, 2018), “The Stick Soldiers” (BOA Editions, 2013) and “So, How Was The War?” (Kent State University Press, 2010). He is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize, a Yaddo residency, a Wallace Stegner Fellowship from Stanford University and a Sewanee Writers’ Conference Fellowship. Martin was also the winner of the 11th annual A. Poulin Jr. Poetry Prize from BOA Editions, Ltd., and the winner of the Jeff Sharlet Memorial Award from The Iowa Review. His work has appeared in many places including The Atlantic, The New York Times, The New Yorker, GQ and The Sun.

Martin graduated from Muskingum University and has a M.F.A. from Arizona State University. He was the 2014-15 Emerging Writer Lecturer at Gettysburg College and earned his Ph.D. from Ohio University.

The Mary Louise White Writers Series is funded through the Fredonia College Foundation and is coordinated through the Department of English.
