Cities to note Juneteenth Monday

City of Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas and City of Dunkirk Housing Authority (DHA) Executive Director Elizabeth Cardona will honor Juneteenth as a paid holiday for all city of Dunkirk and DHA employees on Monday, following both the state of New York and the federal government in recognizing this important holiday. City of Jamestown Mayor Eddie Sundquist also announced that the windows of the City Clerk’s office will be closed on June 20.

While the Federal and State governments have already declared Juneteenth a holiday, cities, towns and villages have the option of honoring the holiday.

Rosas, as the first Hispanic Mayor in the state, and Cardona, the first Hispanic housing authority executive director in the city along with Sundquist, recognize the historic importance of recognizing the holiday that celebrates the official end of slavery, one that has been celebrated locally and nationally for many years by civic groups. This will thus be a paid holiday moving forward for all workers at the city of Dunkirk, the city of Jamestown and at the DHA.
