Taste of South slated for Friday

The Juneteenth 2023 Celebration Committee will be sponsoring the Annual Taste of the South on Friday, May 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Open Door No. 3 Church of God in Christ, 59 Lake Shore Drive West, Dunkirk. The theme for the event is “Summer Feast.” Dinners will be take-out only

The annual Taste of the South is a Southern style African American down home bar-b-que featuring for dinner bar-b-que ribs, bar-b-que chicken, shredded pork, macaroni and cheese, green beans with white potatoes, and corn bread. The dinner will also include a taste of many Southern dishes such as sweet potato casserole, corn on the cob, banana pudding, and sweet potato pie.

This event will kick off the Juneteenth 2023 celebration. For more information and tickets, please call Laurie at 785-7900 or Loretta at 363-1102.

Chicken barbecue planned in Brocton

BROCTON — Brocton Fire Co. will hold a drive-through chicken barbecue on Sunday, May 7 from 11 a.m. until sold out. The drive-through will be located at the fire hall, 80 Lake Ave. The menu includes half chicken, salt potatoes, baked beans and roll for $15 per dinner. There will be no presale tickets.

Steps to Serenity meets Thursdays

The Steps To Serenity Al-Anon Family Group has resumed the meeting hours of 6:45 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays at Harvest Chapel Free Methodist Church, 39 Matteson St., Fredonia. Meetings are held in the last room on the right in the classroom section of the chapel. Please use the canopied door entrance to the building. Those with questions can contact 716-969-2395.

Awareness Fair takes place May 6

SILVER CREEK — A Children’s Mental Health Awareness Fair, hosted at 260 Central Ave., will take place Saturday, May 6 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will be a variety of information regarding mental health, local agencies such as The Boys and Girls Club of Northern Chautauqua County, The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Chautauqua County, Chautauqua Opportunities Inc., Little Fern Yoga & Art (children’s yoga demonstrations and summer sign-ups; Life is Art, a certified Art therapist. featuring mini art journals for youth.

Also, Love What I Doula with information on prenatal and post-partum support with sensory bottles for youth; WNY Whole Body Health with information about Foods for your Moods, Feng Shui, and information on using tapping skills for mental health, a craft table to make a positive affirmation statement bracelet, face painting, food, and games.

This event is free to the community. Later that evening at 6:30 at the same location there will be a family movie night featuring the movie, “Inside Out” with popcorn and a quick discussion about emotions. This event is being sponsored by “Together We Bloom” which consists of volunteers from the community and local mental health professionals.
