Evening storm downs trees, wires, causes damage in city

A late Sunday evening storm created a bit of a hassle for Dunkirk police, firefighters and motorists.

A portion of Lake Shore Drive in Dunkirk was closed to traffic until Monday afternoon as utility crews worked to restore power. The Dunkirk Police Department said its officers responded around 11:45 p.m. to Route 5 and Warsaw Street.

“A strong storm had moved through the area causing extensive damage and knocking power out to the surrounding area,” the police department said. “Upon arrival officers observed numerous large trees and power lines down across Route 5 and surrounding streets.”

The police department added, “Dunkirk Streets Department has been out working on cleaning storm debris from the roadway and removing any hazards that resulted from the storm.”

In addition, the Dunkirk Fire Department was dispatched at 11:40 p.m. to a reported garage fire at 261 Lake Shore Drive East. Upon arrival, crews could see fire coming from a two-car detached garage. Firefighters advanced a hose line into the garage rapidly extinguishing the blaze.

Fire was contained to the garage. There were no injuries. Fire investigators were determining the cause of the fire.

While fighting the structure fire, another report came at 11:47 p.m. that a tree fell into a house at 102 S. Warsaw. Mutual aid was requested from East Dunkirk Fire Department. Upon arrival firefighter found multiple trees and powerlines down in the area with a large tree uprooted falling into a house causing damage.

No injuries were reported. The Red Cross is assisting the resident. Chautauqua County Fire Police also assisted with closing roads so crews could work.
