Gowanda Moose to hold benefit for fire victims
GOWANDA — After an apartment building caught fire in Springville last month, residents were forced out of their homes. Then shortly after that, another family’s residence was severely damaged by a separate fire. In response to those recent events, a local club is hoping to help those that were impacted.
On Saturday beginning at 1 until 5 p.m., Gowanda Loyal Order Of Moose 1382, located at 201 Aldrich St., is holding a benefit to assist fire victims in the area.
For a $10 donation, a basket raffle, a 50-50 raffle, pick a card, and more will be available to those who attend. Food and beverages will be included in the admission cost. A live performance from Tennessee Whiskey will also take place at the club, included as part of the admission.
“We decided we were going to do this benefit to break down the funds to go to the four families, the three families that were impacted by apartment building fire and the other family impacted by a separate fire,” said Julie Fallon, Gowanda Moose Club Administrator.
The Springville apartment building fire took place on Monday, January 23, at approximately 10:30 p.m. on North Buffalo Street. Although no injuries were reported, several residents were displaced. A resident of the apartment building, 36-year-old Sara J. Lilley of Springville, has been charged with intentionally setting the fire. If convicted, Lilley faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison.
Saturday’s benefit is the latest fundraising event for the recent fire victims. A drive was held in conjunction with the Springville Moose Club to collect clothing, furniture, and other household items.
Fallon has noted “a great outpouring of community concern and care” for the victims of the recent fires. Fallon, who has been involved with Gowanda Moose since 2009 and the Moose Club in some capacity overall for over 30 years, felt that events like this are what the Moose Club is really about.
“We’re a family fraternity based on community service, faith and charity,” Fallon said. “This is what keeps me around.”
