Thirty years ago — 1990
Elected by a landslide in Poland’s first popular presidential vote, Lech Walesa got right to work on his pledge to build this struggling young democracy into an economically sound “pillar of peace.” He later made a sentimental pilgrimage to the former Lenin shipyard in Gdansk, his former workplace and birthplace of Solidarity, where he told workers he wouldn’t forget that he once wore overalls.
Forty years ago — 1980
A playwright, producer and director of stage, radio and television productions, Dunkirk native Stanley Fedyszyn Jr. has now added the title of “author” to his many accomplishments with the publication of his book, “The Chauvinist Guide to Gourmet Entertaining.” The book focuses on the art of gourmet cooking. Stanley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Fedyszyn Sr., 327 Lake Shore Drive East, Dunkirk.
Fifty years ago — 1970
The Teen Advisory Council with Steve Waterhouse as president and Debbie Suski as vice president, recently opened a youth center in the basement of the Methodist Church, 32 Main St., Silver Creek.
