Thirty years ago — 1991

State Sen. Jess J. Present (R-Bemus Point) has introduced legislation in the State Senate that would require the commissioner of the Office of Mental Health to provide justification for Governor Cuomo’s proposal to close the Gowanda Psychiatric Center. According to Present, the Gowanda Psychiatric Center has been providing quality medical care for the mentally ill for over 100 years. However, Governor Cuomo has proposed closing the facility, perhaps as early as 1992.

Forty years ago — 1981

Dawn Cross, a senior at Silver Creek Central School, took first place in a typing contest held at the Olean Business Institute in Olean. Miss Cross, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Cross of Silver Creek, was awarded a portable typewriter for her winning score of 99 words per minute. In the accounting category, Diane Sack placed second in the level II accounting competition.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Dr. Willard Stanley, retiring professor of biology at Fredonia State University College, will become curator of a museum on campus named in his honor.
