Thirty years ago — 1992

It appears unlikely that the 16th Century replica sailing ship Sea Lion will make it to New York Harbor for the July 4 sail-past of tall ships. Time is running out. Since insurance has not yet been obtained, it is unlikely enough time will remain to get the 60-foot craft from its present mooring at Barcelona Harbor to New York via the Barge Canal and Hudson River, as originally planned.

Forty years ago — 1982

A city of Dunkirk priest carrying his parish’s bingo receipts back to his rectory was doused with gasoline by two thieves who then ran off with the money. Dunkirk Police report that the Rev. Timothy Kelley was not injured during the incident which occurred shortly after 11 p.m. Fr. Kelley had about $1,600 when he encountered two men who had been hiding near a grotto on the grounds. The men were carrying two coffee cans of gasoline which they threw on the priest.

Fifty years ago — 1972

Fishermen in boats jammed Dunkirk Harbor yesterday morning for the opening of the black bass season. Successful anglers included Tim and Mike Cave of Brocton and Steven Purol of Dunkirk.
