tournament set for Sept. 17
The 17th Annual Gowanda men’s slow pitch softball tournament is set for Saturday, Sept. 17, beginning at 11 a.m. Each team is guaranteed three games.
Prizes and awards for the top team and tournament all-stars. The entry fee is $100.

Chautauqua Hurricane set
to host tryout Saturday
The Chautauqua Hurricane, of the Premier Basketball League, will hold tryouts this Saturday at Brocton Central School from 9 a.m. to noon.
Anyone looking to tryout will have to pay a non-refundable $50 fee.

Lucky Lanes Junior Bowlers

Youth bowler ages range from 4 to 20 years old as of Sept. 1, 2016. Teams may be all boys, all girls, or mixed. Teams will consist of four bowlers. Leagues will start Sept. 17. All bowlers from age 6 to 20 will have their choice of bowling at either the 10 a.m. or the 1 p.m. shift each Saturday.

Friday Night Couples League – It was another beautiful Friday night for golf with 15 couples enjoying a round of golf and another fabulous dinner catered by Tom’s Restaurant in Irving.
The low score was 30 with the high being 35. There were four prizes for closest to the pin on the par 3’s and also five gift certificates given out to area restaurants through a random drawing. This league is open to all golfers of all skill sets. If interested, call Rich at the Vineyards at 672-7888 to sign up no later than Thursday morning.

Vineyards Golf League
There will be a new Wednesday night league forming for the 2017 golfing season at the Vineyards Golf Course.
This is a handicap scoring league with two-person teams. The league will be a shotgun start at 5 p.m. After golf, there will be food and drink for a minimal charge if interested in staying after golf. The first 36 players will be accepted. We will start in the middle of May weather permitting and play for 20 weeks with a scramble and banquet the last week. There will be a league fee which is for prizes and a full steak dinner at the end of the season.

Tri-County Youth Soccer Begins Sept. 11
The Tri-County co-ed youth soccer program will begin its fall session on Sunday, Sept. 11 at the George Dispenza Memorial Field on Broadway Road in Gowanda.
Each of the five sessions will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Sunday nights. Children between the ages of 5 through 14 who reside in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua or southern Erie counties are allowed to participate in the program.

Wednesday Travel League – Al Etzel was the big winner after shooting a league course record 81 at Brierwood Country Club, in Hamburg.
Etzel broke the previous record of 84, which was held by Robert Calph and Danny Kubera. The victory was Etzel’s league-leading fifth of the season and also put him over 2,500 career points. Etzel also shot the low front nine score of 38 while Adam Gornikiewicz shot the low back nine score of 40.
Other flight winners were Tim Walawender (B Flight), Dave Franklin (C Flight on a tiebreaker over Tom Destro) and John Tofil (D Flight). The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Lenny Leszkowicz.

The Chautauqua County Hockey Association is looking for players or teams for the A and B Divisions. Skill levels range from the intermediate level to current/past college players. Individuals or full teams are welcome.
Games are Friday through Sunday only.
League play begins Sept. 9 and will conclude late March.
Season consists of 18 regular season games plus playoffs and a three-game Championship Series. Awards will be issued for the regular season division winners and league champions for each division.

The Gary Tripp Memorial Golf Tournament (GTMGT) plans are progressing and on the tee. The 2016 tournament is Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Vineyards/Hillview Golf Courses in Fredonia. The registration fee of $65 per golfer includes food on the courses and dinner at the Kosciuszko Club. Times for the tournament begins with registration at the Vineyards Golf Course at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. Dinner and awards will be at 4 p.m.

Youth bowler ages range from 4 to 20 years old as of Sept. 1, 2016. Teams may be all boys, all girls, or mixed. Teams will consist of four bowlers. Leagues will start Sept. 17. All bowlers from age 6 to 20 will have their choice of bowling at either the 10 a.m. or the 1 p.m. shift each Saturday.

In the first round of the playoffs, the Giants were led defensively by Jason Tomkiewicz’s dominant pitching performance.
Throwing a nine-inning complete game, scattering four hits, striking out eight and walking one. On offense, the Giants pounded out 13 hits at the plate. Nick Raynor led the way, going 3 for 5 and scoring twice. Todd Fryberger went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Jeff Dimmer collected a pair of singles and an RBI. Shawn Hennessey ripped an RBI double and scored three times.
Derek Deceilio’s RBI triple in the top of the ninth secured the win.

Wednesday Travel League – The league held its fourth major of the season, the Frank Borowski Invitational, at Kane Country Club in Kane, Pennsylvania. Dave Mathews was the overall winner, posting a round of 76, in the tournament named for league founder Frank Borowski.
Ed Tofil finished second with 77, carding a birdie on the 18th hole, forcing Mathews to make par to ensure the victory. Robert Calph finished third with 79. Mathews was low on the front nine with 39 while Calph and Tofil each shot one-over-par 36 for low on the back nine.

The Chautauqua Hurricane will hold a Puerto Rican cuisine dinner on Saturday, Aug. 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. at 704 Central Ave., Dunkirk.

The first of many couples four-person scramble was held last Friday.
There were 13 couples who all enjoyed a shot-gun start at 5 p.m. round of golf and a catered dinner after golf supplied by Tom’s Restaurant in Irving.
There was a random drawing for five prizes given out to the couples. Low score was 28 with the high score being 31. This couples league is open to all couples no matter how your golf skills are. There is a sign up sheet in the office at the Vineyards.

Ed Tofil added to his all-time victory record with his 53rd overall win and second of the season, posting the low round of 76 at Scenic Heights Golf Course in Wattsburg, Pennsylvania.
Tofil is also the first golfer in league history to record 50 rounds below the score of 80. Finishing in a tie for second place with 79 were Mick Dunning Sr. and Jeff Marsowicz. Pat Weaver and Mike Willoughby each shot 80. Tofil was low on the front nine with 38 while Dunning and Willoughby matched his low back nine 38. Marsowicz and Lenny Leszkowicz (85) shot their low career round while Weaver and Willoughby each matched their personal bests. In the B Flight, Don Kujawa was the winner after a tiebreaker with Leszkowicz. The winner of the Bruce “Java” Chrabasz Commissioner’s Award was Joe Caine.

The Gowanda Boosters Club held its Second Annual Golf Tournament fundraiser at the Gowanda Country Club recently.
Participating in the event were 84 golfers as 31 local businesses contributed as hole sponsors.
The overall men’s winning team with a score of 56, was “Native Pride,” made up of JC Seneca, Mike Leaf, Chris Jimerson and Adrian Stevens. The women’s overall winners, “The Pink Jelly Bellies” were comprised of Tina Weber, Nancy Rodriguez, Paulette Degenaars and Sue Emerson, and ended the day with a score of 73. Both winning teams received $200 gift certificates to the Pro Shop at the Gowanda Country Club.
Other winners of the Boosters Tournament event include Jason Seneca with the Men’s Longest Drive, Trudy Jackson with the Women’s Longest Drive, Paulette Degenaars with the Women’s Closest to Pin and Dan Elvin with the Men’s Closest to Pin.
The Gowanda Boosters Club would like to extend a sincere “thank you” to all who participated in, or contributed to this event.
The Boosters are a volunteer, non-profit organization dedicated to raising money to promote student academics, athletics, and the arts in the Gowanda Central School district. The Chautauqua County Hockey Association is looking for players or teams for the A and B Divisions. Skill levels range from the intermediate level to current/past college players. Individuals or full teams are welcome.

softball league
The 2016 Tri-County mens’ slow pitch softball league crowned Springville as this year’s playoff champion. Springville defeated Gowanda, 9-8, in the semifinals and shutout Cattaraugus-Little Valley in the finals, 10-0. Cattaraugus-Little Valley reached the championship game by defeating the regular-season champion team from Dunkirk, 9-8.
The playoff MVP was Mark Heichberger from Springville. Springville manager Jim Herniman was presented the championship plaque at the conclusion of the final game. Playoff all-stars consisted of Shawn Andrews and Jeff Horth, (Cattaraugus-Little Valley), Dylan McMahon, (Gowanda) and Manny Sanchez (Dunkirk).
The 17th annual fall tournament will be held in Gowanda on Saturday, Sept. 17, beginning at noon. Teams from the Tri-County area can register by calling Mark Benton at 532-4053 or email hidibenton@aol.com.

Hanover 15U Travel baseball tryouts
The Hanover 15U Travel baseball team will hold tryouts Sunday, Aug. 28 at 2 p.m. and Wednesday, Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. at the Silver Creek Central varsity baseball diamond, 1 Dickenson St., Silver Creek.
The team is looking for players from Chautauqua, Erie or Cattaraugus counties, ages 14-15.
League eligibility is based on player’s age as of April 30, 2017. Players cannot turn 16 before this date. Players born after May 1, 2001 are invited to try out.
Hanover Travel Baseball is a program based in Silver Creek. The team participates in the Clarence Travel League and Southtowns Travel Baseball League, as well as several tournaments across the Western New York area.

37th Annual Westfield One-Pitch Slow Pitch Softball Tournament
The Annual Westfield One-Pitch Slow Pitch Softball Tournament will be held Aug. 27, in Westfield on the softball fields at NorthLake & Smith. Entry fees must be in by Aug. 25.
The tournament will be a double elimination format if there are more than 12 teams and a round robin format if there are 12 teams or less. This is a one-pitch slow pitch format, with each batter starting with a 3-2 count. The entry fee is $250 per team. A payout based on 16 teams is $750 for 1st, $375 for 2nd, and $250 for 3rd.
Any proceeds will go to the Woody Keyser fund.

If your son or daughter is playing a fall sport for Dunkirk High School or Dunkirk Middle School there is a required parent/student meeting with the Athletic Director on Tuesday, Aug. 9 at 6 p.m. in the High School auditorium. The Randy Goss Memorial golf tournament will be held Saturday, Aug. 20 at Hillview Golf course with a tee off at 9 a.m. This is a two-person scramble with the cost of $60 per golfer. The fee covers 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch, CTPs, skins, hole prizes and a barbecue dinner by FRED’S at Dom Polski?s following golf.

The mass start begins at 9 a.m. Water and refreshment stops and sag wagon services are provided. Helmets are required. Recreational tours of courses of 25, 40, 62, 75 and 100 miles are offered, with a light meal at the finish provided.
