The Jamestown Red Raiders and Dunkirk Marauders high school baseball teams took a break from their league schedule to play a non-league game on Saturday afternoon at Dunkirk High School, with the Red Raiders coming out on top, 9-4. The entire lineups on both squads were able to participate, with many players going in various positions.

After a scoreless first inning, Jamestown was able to strike first in the second inning. Christian Dolce ran hard down the line to force an errant throw by the Marauders third baseman to get the rally started. Andrew Pumford was then hit by a pitch before Hunter Beardsley had the big blast of the inning with a two run double. He would later score in the inning when Chris Beardsley reached on an error.

“Our first two pitchers threw really well today,” said Dunkirk coach Frank Jagoda. “We had a challenging time in the early innings making routine plays behind them, which allowed Jamestown to bring up more batters to the plate, where they were able to come up with the clutch hit.”

Jamestown would add another run in the fourth from a solo home run over the left field fence from Matt Hill.

The Red Raiders (6-7, 1-6) added four more insurance runs in the sixth. After Hill walked, No. 9 hitter Pumford blasted a two run home run over the left field fence. Later in the inning, both Beardsleys scored on a single from Jonny Sandstrom.

“We have been getting contributions from our entire team all year long,” said Jamestown coach Dave Roehmholdt. “It is great to have that balance and a significant addition which is what leads to a strong team.”

Dunkirk (4-5, 3-8) scored its first run in the game in the sixth. Alex Ahlstrom took advantage of a wild pitch on a strikeout where he advanced to first. Lucas Porpiglia followed with a single before Jared Glowniak struck with an RBI single.

Jamestown responded with another run in the seventh. Pinch hitter Matthew Roehmholdt began the rally with a single where Chris Beardsley’s single down the left field line scored Roehmholdt.

The Marauders would fight to the end with a competitive seventh inning where their first five batters would reach base. Josiah Rivera led off with a single, which was his third hit of the game. After Phillip Messina received a free pass, Peyton Ahlstrom singled to load the bases. Alex Ahlstom then walked in another run followed by Koty Leeper’s single to bring Messina around. Later in the inning, Porpiglia contributed with an RBI on his groundout. Jamestown would finish the game without any more damage when they were able to throw out a Marauders’ base runner trying to steal third to end the game.

“It feels good to get this game in and do this well especially after a couple tough losses this week,” stated Roehmholdt. “We have four league games upcoming this week so we were able to make a few changes in preparation for the upcoming competition.”

Jamestown’s Bryce Jackson started for the Red Raiders, pitching three scoreless innings, giving up one walk and one hit while striking out four. Drew Boggs did great in relief pitching two scoreless innings surrendering two hits and two walks while striking out two. Christian Dolce also pitched one solid inning.

“We saw Jamestown’s number one and number two today,” said Jagoda. “They did a great job. I was glad that we saw them so we could learn from this and make some good necessary adjustments.”

Glowniak started for Dunkirk, pitching two innings, giving up three runs (zero earned) on one hit and one walk while fanning three. Tristan Skelly also pitched three innings, surrendering one run on two hits while striking out four. Alex Ahlstrom and Nick Hernandez also pitched in relief.

Josiah Rivera led the Marauders with a three hit game, including a triple. “This is one of the best games that he has played,” said Jagoda. “Unfortunately, we struggled to put anything together around those hits.”

Peyton Ahlstrom also had a multiple hit game with two singles.

Matt Hill led Jamestown’s offense with two hits, including a home run. Chris Beardsley also had a multiple hit game including two singles, one of which was a bunt single. Hunter Beardsley added a double.

“Our kids are really enjoying themselves playing this game,” added Jagoda. “Some may have been a little disappointed, but seeing all those smiles especially when leaving the field, means that they are having fun.”

Both teams play league games on Monday. Jamestown plays Clarence and Dunkirk hosts Chautauqua Lake.
