Haynes leads way for Devils in 5-2 win against Brockport

BROCKPORT — Fredonia State improved its SUNYAC playoff chances Friday with a 5-2 win over the Brockport Golden Eagles at the Tuttle North Ice Arena.

Jacob Haynes had two goals, Ethan Kirbis, Bryce Witman, and Antonio Demacopoulos each had a goal, and Anton Rosen made 37 saves as the Blue Devils raised their record to 3-7-3 in the SUNYAC. The nine points moved them one point out of the sixth and final playoff spot, currently shared by Morrisville and Cortland.

The Blue Devils are 6-9-7 overall. The loss dropped Brockport to 13-8-1 overall and 6-6-1 in the conference.

The Blue Devils wasted no time gaining the upper hand when Kirbis scored his fourth goal of the season 14 seconds into the game. His shot from the slot was set up from a pass from behind the net by Haynes, who extended his points streak to 14 straight games.

Haynes made it 2-0 at 9:07 of the second period with a short-handed goal when he picked up a loose puck in the defensive end and scored on a wrist shot, his 12th goal of the season.

Witman’s second goal of the season came on a rush out of the defensive end and pass from fellow freshman Craig McCabe at 17:22 of the second period.

Haynes’s second goal of the night came 10 seconds into the third period. He went in alone after a takeaway and lead pass from defenseman Tommy Martyn.

Demacopoulos made it 5-0 with the Blue Devils’ second short-handed goal of the game at 9:52 of the third period. He was the beneficiary of a drop pass by Matt Letmanski, with Martyn picking up another assist. It was the third goal of the season for Demacopoulos.

Rosen’s shutout bid ended 16 seconds later when Jeremy Solat scored for Brockport and triggered the tossing onto the ice of nearly 600 stuffed animals on Brockport SAAC Teddy Bear Toss Night.

Fredonia State’s task gets taller Saturday when No. 3 ranked Geneseo visits Steele Hall for the final home game of the regular season. Puck drop at 7 p.m. will be preceded by a short, on-ice ceremony recognizing this year’s seniors.
