Area teams continue to rank high in state polls

The Section VI playoffs are in full swing, and the New York State Sportswriters Association rankings continue to acknowledge the accomplishments of schools in the western Southern Tier.

In football, Jamestown (8-0), which entertains Lockport at 7 tonight in a quarterfinal at Strider Field, is No. 2 in Class A; Fredonia (8-0), which takes on Akron at 7 p.m. Saturday in a quarterfinal at Dunkirk High School is No. 7 in Class C; and Salamanca (7-1), which hosts Lackawanna at 7 tonight in a quarterfinal, is No. 14 in Class C. Southwestern (5-3), which is listed as honorable mention in Class C, travels to Depew tonight for a 7 o’clock quarterfinal kickoff.

In Class D, Randolph (8-0) and Clymer/Sherman/Panama (6-2) are ranked second and seventh respectively. Franklinville/Ellicottville (6-2) is No. 12. All three of those teams have already secured berths in the semifinals next weekend. Randolph will entertain Portville at 7 p.m., Nov. 5 and Clymer/Sherman/Panama will host Franklinville/Ellicottville at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at Panama.

Among eight-man teams, Frewsburg stands at No. 8 with a 5-0 record.

In girls soccer, Fredonia, which plays Roy-Hart at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Williamsville North in the Class B2 final, is No. 19 in Class B; Frewsburg, which squares off with Wilson at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dunkirk in the Class C final, is No. 12 in Class C; and Ellicottville, which meets North Collins at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Class D final at Eden High School, is No. 13 in Class D.

Entering today’s Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association cross country championships at Bemus Point Golf Course, the Southwestern boys own the highest ranking at No. 3 in Class C, six spots in front of Allegany-Limestone. In Class D, Maple Grove is No. 5 and Frewsburg is No. 19.

Among girls teams, Allegany-Limestone is No. 7 and Southwestern is No. 16 in Class C; and Maple Grove is No. 6, Clymer/Sherman/Panama is No. 8 and Silver Creek is No. 18 in Class D.
