Hornets down Dunkirk for first victory 40-37

FORESTVILLE — Forestville made three free throws inside the final 30 seconds to pick up its first win of the season, 40-37 over Dunkirk in nonleague girls basketball.

Madison Christian made a pair of free throws with 29.5 seconds remaining and Carilene Sliwa added another from the charity stripe with 4.9 seconds left.

The Marauders (5-7) advanced the ball on a timeout with 1.5 seconds remaining, but threw away the inbounds pass to give the Hornets (1-10) their first victory.

Dunkirk won the first meeting 54-36 on Dec. 13.

Sliwa led Forestville on Tuesday with 15 points and six steals; Christian had 9 points and seven rebounds; Ingrid Gibson had 10 rebounds; and eighth-grader Elizabeth Case had 7 points and seven rebounds in just her second varsity game.

Molly DiCara led the Marauders with 14 points to go along with nine rebounds and four steals. Shyla Karin had 12 points and five steals, while Brooke Szymczak grabbed 11 rebounds.

WILDCATS DOWN GOLDEN FALCONS

FALCONER — Kelsey Wagner scored 9 points, dished out four assists and had four steals as Sherman edged Falconer 44-21 in nonleague action.

Emmersen Crawford added 9 points for the Wildcats (10-3, 6-1 CCAA D2 West), Isa Kioko had six rebounds, and Teagan Gratto had five rebounds and four steals.

Falconer (4-9, 1-3 CCAA D1 East) was led by Ashley Smith with 7 points and seven rebounds. Augustin Krenzer had three assists and two steals, while both Kamryn Harper and Ellyson Baglia collected seven boards.

RED DRAGONS ROLL T’WOLVES

BEMUS POINT — Morgan Caldwell scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Maple Grove past Cattaraugus-Little Valley 42-12 in nonleague play.

Bryanna Cornell grabbed 11 rebounds for the Red Dragons (7-4, 2-4 CCAA D2 West) and Rebekka Roberts collected six boards.

Kadie Benzel was the top scorer for Cattaraugus-Little Valley (0-10, 0-2 CCAA D2 East) with 6 points.

SILVER CREEK — Tanleigh Bestine poured in a game-high 27 points to lead Westfield over Silver Creek 44-27 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West action.

Eva Gnadzinski added another 6 points for Westfield (10-4, 4-2) in the win.

Silver Creek (4-8, 0-6) was led by Khloe Karnes with 13 points and five steals, Rachael Beadle hauled in 11 rebounds, dished three assists and made a block, Gracie Williams also had five steals.

CARDS SHOOT COLD IN LOSS

RANDOLPH — Bri Barr-Buday scored a game-high 16 points as Nichols picked up a nonleague 44-30 road victory in Randolph.

Evie Walcott added 12 points and Madisen Wilson scored 10 as Nichols thwarted the Cardinals.

Skylar Herington paced Randolph with 10 points and three steals, Quinn Pence had seven assists and six steals, Zoelle Dickerson added six boards, three blocks and four steals, and Gianna Bowles had five steals.

DUNKIRK — Reece Beaver scored 23 points to lead Southwestern past Dunkirk 77-24 in Division 2 West action on Monday.

Braya Beaver added 13 points for the Trojans, Bella Sirianni scored 12 and Charlotte Beaver had 10 in the victory.

Dunkirk was led by Molly DiCara with 12 points.
