Thirty years ago — 1993 The real Elvis wasn’t spotted, but people lined up at the Dunkirk and Fredonia post offices to pick up a piece of history. The long-awaited commemorative stamp of the king of rock ‘n roll went on sale at noon on Jan. 9 and people began lining up as early as 11 a.m. for the chance to buy the special stamps. Thirty years ago — 1993 A “Do You Remember?” photo reveals that Nial Hadden operated a business at 6 Center St. to support Fredonia’s growing natural gas business at the turn of the century. He advertised “Everything for Natural Gas — Power Burners a Specialty.” The photo was taken between 1907-1909. The gentleman in the photo is Nial Hadden’s older brother, William Parks Hadden, who was a partner with his brother in the business. William was a member of the Masonic Order at Fredonia. Thirty years ago — 1993 Four sponsors have been found so far to each donate $1,000 for the “Welcome To Dunkirk” signs the city plans to build at all major entrances to the city. The donors are Lake Shore Savings and Loan, Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency, Quality Markets and Tops Markets who have agreed to donate funds for one sign each. Thirty years ago — 1993 The Dunkirk Local Development Corporation has approved a $50,000 loan that will be used to help the owners of Johnson’s Central Service renovate two existing garage bays into a mini-mart food store operation. The total project costs about $150,000 with the rest coming from private financing. The business will be named the Green Tree Convenience Store.
