SUNY Credit Union announces scholarships

Jack Forster

The SUNY Fredonia Federal Credit Union is proud to announce two scholarships were awarded to two deserving high school students.

Jack Forster, a Fredonia High School senior, is the proud recipient of the 22nd annual Frances C. Granata Scholarship. She was the first President of the Credit Union in 1974.

With the support of his parents, Heath and Kathy Forster, he is the valedictorian of his class and an active member of the Fredonia music department. Forster is an Editor-in-Chief of the Spectator, the Fredonia High School newspaper, the Treasurer of the National Honor Society, the Secretary of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, a member of the Gay Straight Alliance, and a class advisor in Student Council.

He plans on using this scholarship to finance his education in environmental studies at the University of South Carolina.

After completing his undergraduate degree, Jack plans to attend law school to pursue a career in environmental law.

Philip Michael Messina

Philip Michael Messina, a Dunkirk High School senior, is the son of Dean V. and Patricia A. Messina of Dunkirk and the recipient of the 22nd annual Paul T. Schonhart scholarship. He was President of the Credit Union from 1983-1998. Messina will graduate in the top ten of his class.

While in high school Philip has been a member of National Honor Society, Student Council (Co-President), the JROTC Program (Company Commander, Cadet Captain) and was selected as the 2020 Dunkirk Memorial American Legion Post #62 Boys State Delegate.

His high school athletic career includes Junior Varsity Baseball (seventh), Varsity Baseball (grades eight to 12) at the position of catcher, Junior Varsity Football and Varsity Football at the quarterback position. He has received many athletic honors including Dunkirk baseball CCAA West Division I Second Team All Star, Dunkirk Baseball Offensive MVP, Dunkirk Baseball CCAA West Division 1 First Team All Star, Dunkirk Baseball Defensive MVP, Dunkirk Football Second Team All Star, Dunkirk Football MVP, Cross Training Character Athlete of the Game, and WDOE Player of the Game.

His community service includes volunteering for events such as the Buffalo Kids News Day, TOP Soccer Buddy Program, Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign Bell Ringing, World Book Tour Day, Little League, Football 101 Camp, and Dunkirk Football Youth Camp.

In the fall, Messina will attend Cayuga Community College to pursue a degree in Health Sciences with a concentration in Physical Therapy and begin his collegiate baseball career.
