Public hearing video

on fracking to appear

on Access Channel 5

Town of Chautauqua board members considered enacting a one-year moratorium on high-volume horizontal fracking at a public hearing Feb. 10. Though the town board voted 3 to 1 to reject the moratorium, the 2-hour public discussion revealed the nature of the divide between those who support the new industrial scale high-volume horizontal multi-pad fracking and those opposing HVHF in Chautauqua County.

The 96-minute video, filmed and edited by the Mayville-based film group Snowshoefilms, documents the full statements of each of the 45 speakers. As several local residents noted, over 160 New York towns and villages have enacted moratoria or bans high volume horizontal fracking, to allow them local control in the event New York state lifts the moratorium on high volume horizontal fracking.

The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 12:20 and 6:20 p.m. each day beginning on Saturday with the last airing on March 7.

Access 5 is available to cable viewers in the Chau-tauqua, Mayville, North Har-mony, Portland, Sherman and Westfield areas.

Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter at their legacy channel assignment, or on a QAM digital television (channel varies by system) that has been recently autoscanned. Programming from Access Channel 5 (channel 21.4 on a QAM digital TV) is also aired each evening in the Town of Hanover on cable channel 12 (channel 98.3 on a QAM digital TV).

LWV hosting hydrofracking discussion

The League of Women Voters invites the public to a discussion on horizontal hydrofracking with Jamestown Community College Instructor Glenn Wahl at 7 p.m. on Feb. 25 in Room 117 of JCC-North. This is a topic about which even the basic facts are controversial, and because Gov. Andrew Cuomo may soon lift New York state’s moratorium on the practice, residents of the north county need to become informed about its potential benefits and dangers. Waste products from fracking have already been transported over county routes and the county is authorized to spread fracking flow-back brine to de-ice its roads, so public discussion of the costs and benefits of the process is timely.

The meeting will begin with a screening of a video, The Ethics of Fracking. After the screening, Wahl will answer questions from the audience and a general discussion may follow. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Invasive species meeting Thursday

The U.S. Army Corps will host a public meeting Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Downtown Buffalo Central Library Auditorium, 1 Lafayette Square, Buffalo.

The meeting will feature a presentation on the Great Lakes Mississippi River Basin Interbasin Study and allow time for public comment on this report.

This study analyzed a variety of options that would stop the movement of invasive species like Asian carp between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River. The geographic focus of this study is mainly on the connection between the Mississippi and Lake Michigan in Chicago, but it has significance because an invasion of some of these species could be very damaging for all the Great Lakes – especially Lake Erie, since it is the most biological productive of all the Great Lakes.
