Walk 4 Paws

The Walk 4 Paws will be held Saturday at the Chau-tauqua Institution Market Gate area. Check-in begins at 9 a.m. with the walk, awards and complimentary refreshments following. Community members walk alongside their favorite pets and get personal sponsors to help raise money for the Chautauqua County Hu-mane Society. Awards will be given to individuals with high fundraising totals and for the best pet costumes. The public can participate in teams. Dogs and other animals are welcome. Open house Saturday

Fall Festival and Pork Dinner Saturday

St. Aloysius Regional School will hold its Fall Festival and Pork Dinner Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (or sold out) at St. Al’s Parish Hall, 186 Franklin St., Springville.

The cost for the dinner is $9. Patrons can dine in or take out. Fall harvest items and baked goods will be available for purchase. There will be children’s activities and a silent auction with fall-themed items.

Steak, Ham and Turkey Party Saturday

J. Carter Knapp Post 953, Forestville American Legion, 6 Cedar St. Forestville, will hold their annual Steak, Ham, and Turkey Party on Saturday at 7 p.m. There will be a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, and ticket drawings for $100, $50 and $25. Fire Prevention Day

The Dunkirk Home De-pot will hold its 12th An-nual Fire Prevention Day Saturday at the Vineyard Drive site from 9 a.m. until noon, rain or shine.

There will be several area fire departments displaying a variety of apparatus, Sparky the fire dog, the Dunkirk Fire Department’s House of Safety, the Masons will run their child ID program, the Home Depot Kid’s workshop, face painting, music, vendors, and more.

Gowanda Police K9 Mike memorial service Saturday

The Gowanda Police Department will hold a memorial service for K9 Mike, who recently passed away. The service will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Chang Hu Park. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held at the Gowanda Free Methodist Church, 149 W. Main St.

Comedy night

There will be a Comedy Night and raffles to benefit the Centaur Stride Therapeutic Riding Center on Saturday from 7 to 11 p.m. at the East Dunkirk Fire Hall, 10949 S. Roberts Road. Tickets are $25. Ormsby to appear on Chautauqua Sunrise

Chautauqua Sunrise will feature Dr. Lauren Ormsby as the guest Saturday. Ormsby will discuss Common Core curriculum. The show will be hosted by Doc Hamels. The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities.

Read-a-thon Thursday

The Sinclairville Free Library Read-a-thon will be held at the library Thursday from 2 and 7 p.m.

Of the funds raised, the Libri Foundation will match $350 at a 2 to 1 ratio for the purchase of new hardcover children’s books.

Participants are asked to pick up sponsor sheets at the library and gather pledges in support of their reading. Readers are not required to participate for the entire time period. So, if readers have only an hour to spare, they can join the Read-a-thon at any time. Prizes will be awarded hour-ly and refreshments provided. One can also participate by sending a donation in support of this fundraiser. Call the library at 962-5885 for more information.

Harvest dinner Friday

A Harvest Dinner is scheduled for Friday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 49 S. Portage St., Westfield. The featured entree is roast turkey. The meal also includes side dishes, beverage and dessert. The cost is adults: $10, and children 10 and under: $5. Patrons may dine in or take out.

Pancake breakfast

The Dunkirk Historical Society is holding a Pancake Breakfast Saturday at Apple-bee’s on Vineyard Drive. Tickets are $6 and are available from members, at the door or by calling 366-3797.

Elvis competition

Moose Lodge 118 of 19 Clinton St., Westfield will present the “Reflections of the King 2014 Elvis Competition” Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, the Elvis Champion’s Showcase and Contest begins at 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the Elvis Champion’s Showcase will begin at 4:30 p.m., with the Legends Live at 5:30 p.m.

Advance tickets can be purchased for both days at $36 per person, or for one day at $20 per person. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $22 per person per day.

Food will be available for purchase both days from 5 to 9 p.m. There will also be raffles and door prizes.

Proceeds from this community service event will be donated to St. Jude’s Child-ren’s Research Hospital.

Water project budget meeting today

The Dunkirk Common Council Finance Committee is scheduled to meet today at 6 p.m. to review Fund 15, which involves all expenses related to the water filtration plant upgrades and consent order items that required the upgrades. Fiscal Affairs Officer Rich Halas asked for the meeting to explain the process and status of Fund 15.

St. Joseph’s Church at 71 E. Main St. in Gowanda will hold an indoor yard sale in the school.

Blood drive Wednesday

The Cassadaga Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will host a Community Blood Drive on Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Community Building/Fire Hall. The auxiliary will draw one lucky donor to receive a gift card at the end of the drive.

Main Street Extension paving today

H. Olsen & Sons, the city of Dunkirk paving contractor, will be paving Main Street Extension between Newton Street and the railroad tracks near Fieldbrook Foods beginning early this morning. Motorists should use an alternate route.

Cassadaga Job Corps Academy to host

informational session

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus at 8115 Glasgow Road, Cassadaga, on Thursday beginning at 10 a.m.

The Cassadaga Job Corps provides training to begin a career in the healthcare, construction, and the security industries, as well as high school equivalency classes to those in need of a diploma. Training in certified nurse aide, carpentry, painting, plumbing and electrical are available as well as the advanced training for licensed practical nurse.

The academy will accept young adults, age 16-24, who are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career. Applicants can apply for on-center living or non-residential status, and all applicants will enroll on a full federal scholarship if accepted.

The Pomfret Town Board will meet briefly today at 5:15 p.m. in the town hall for the purpose of receiving the tentative town budget.

Harrington Road

closure

Railroad crews are making repairs to the Harrington Road railroad crossing in the town of Sheridan. The road is closed to all traffic at the railroad crossing until around 5 p.m. on Wednesday. A detour will not be posted. Plan on taking an alternate route if necessary.

Gas price rises

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have risen 0.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.56/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has increased 1.2 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.34/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

The Forestville Fall Festival brings back a popular attraction.

Rummage sale

The fall edition of the Trinity Episcopal Church Women’s rummage sale is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

The sale features treasures just waiting to be discovered. All items are in good condition and ready to find a new home.

All the proceeds are used to support local needs such as the Friendly Kitchen and the Rural Ministry. The sale will be held in Garland Hall, 11 Day St. Please use the back entrance.

Walk Against Domestic Violence and Unity Day Celebration Friday

October is National Do-mestic Violence Awareness Month. The Chautauqua County Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault will sponsor its 17th Annual Walk Against Domestic Violence and 12th Annual Unity Day Celebration on Friday.

The Walk begins at noon at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena and commences down Third Street to Tracy Plaza. The Unity Day Celebration will be held inside the lobby of City Hall immediately following the walk. Keynote speaker for the event will be Assistant District Attorney Rachel Roberts of the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office.

A light lunch will be served to those in attendance. This event is free and open to the public.

This is not a fund-raising event.

Perrysburg to hold

special meeting Wednesday

The Perrysburg Town Board will host a special town board meeting on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at the Perrysburg Town Hall, 10460 Peck Hill Road.

LWV Chautauqua Luncheon with Michael Pease Wednesday

On Wednesday, the League of Women Voters of Chautauqua County will host a “Hot Topics” luncheon at the Clarion Hotel at noon. Chief Executive Of-ficer of the Chautauqua Center Michael Pease will inform attendees about the center and also discuss how the Affordable Care Act responds to the needs of seniors, Medicare/Medicaid clients, the indigent, and health centers. Access and insurance will be key topics. Pease has been the driving administrative force in the organization and implementation of this primary care effort.

The Chautauqua Center is a federally qualified health center providing family medicine and wellness outpatient services to individuals of all ages. It accepts a wide range of insurances and has a sliding scale available for self-pay.

If a person does not have a primary care coordinator or simply cannot get an appointment in a timely manner, they can contact The Chautauqua Center. The patient-centered service principles are access, treatment, education, and prevention, delivered by friendly and professional clinic and administrative teams.

Hanford Bay railroad crossing closed

The Hanford Bay railroad crossing will be closed beginning today at 5 a.m. for repairs. The repairs will take approximately three days. The access road is open for residents to use. Travelers are asked to go slow and obey traffic signs on the access road.

Dunkin’ Donuts fundraiser for Food Bank of WNY Monday

Dunkin’ Donuts will celebrate National Coffee Day with a major coffee donation to the Food Bank of Western New York.

The coffee donation coincides with the recent launch of Dunkin’ Dark Roast in Buffalo and nationwide. On Monday, National Coffee Day, guests can walk into any participating Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant in the greater Buffalo area and receive a free medium cup of Dunkin’ Donuts hot Dark Roast Coffee.

The Food Bank is the primary hunger relief organization in Western New York, supporting 340 member agencies. For every dollar raised, the Food Bank is able to obtain five pounds of food and distribute that food to more than 96,000 individuals and 34,030 households each month in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara counties; 38,685 are children and 7,847 are seniors.

Improving balance program for seniors at Brooks

The devastating effects of falls and broken bones are a feared risk as people age. To combat the potential outcomes seniors may face, the Physical Therapy Department at Brooks Memorial Hospital has developed a program to help seniors ‘stay balanced.’ Further, it can significantly lower the risk of falls and the potentially life-changing consequences.

On Sept. 30, Brooks will begin offering the “Brooks Balance Clinic: Staying Balanced Throughout Your Life.” The clinic consists of 10 ‘wellness and balance’ program sessions focused on strategies for staying balanced, decreasing the risk of falls and improving postural control.

The clinic will meet twice-weekly, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m., for five consecutive weeks. The program sessions will be held at the Brooks Memorial Hospital Physical Therapy Department at 529 Central Ave., in Dunkirk. The cost for the program is $13 per session.

Fredonia yard waste pickup to begin Monday

The village of Fredonia will be picking up limbs and yard waste beginning Monday, unless preempted for road maintenance operations, in which case the scheduled pick up will resume on the next available day.

Collection will begin at 7 a.m. and continue until every village street has been collected once. Bags and brush are collected separately by different crews. All items for collection must be at the curb no later than 7 a.m. Monday morning. In no case will there be repeat collection of areas completed.

All yard waste must be bagged and all limbs and brush must be tied with twine. Limbs and brush must be cut no longer than 4 feet in length with bundles being no larger than 18 inches in diameter. Bundles and bags are limited to 65 pounds in weight. There is no collection of loose material at this time.

Residents are reminded that it is illegal to place leaves and grass into the street at any time.

Village residents may bring bagged yard waste and bundled brush to the designated area at the DPW yard, 176 Eagle St., at any time. The drop-off area will be available until further notice. Remember to empty your bags.

The cooperation of residents is greatly appreciated.

Drug drop off today in city

The city of Dunkirk Police Department, WCA Alstar Ambulance, the village of Fredonia Police Department, SUNY Fredonia Police and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department, in cooperation with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency, are coordinating National Prescription Drug Dropoff Day today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

WCA Alstar Services has again provided its north county headquarters as a site for a drive-in dropoff location at its location on Orchard Street behind School 3 at Route 60 in the city. Prescriptions can be dropped off with no questions asked.

City paving moving along

The city of Dunkirk Department of Public Works Department has announced that H. Olsen & Son, the city’s 2014 pavement contractor, finished the Point Gratiot area hot-in-place cover and the hot-in-place cover around School No. 5 on Friday. The crew will next move to the city’s Fourth Ward to finish hot-in-place cover today. The DPW thanks residents and motorists for their patience and caution.

Pups With Cuffs Run for the Law Saturday

Chautauqua Chapter of American Bikers Aimed Toward Education of NY will host a fundraiser for the Chautauqua County K9 Division, Pups With Cuffs Run for the Law. The event will be held Saturday at St. Stephen’s Hotel, 2 W. Main St, Brocton. The motorcycle run registration will be 10:30 a.m. until noon. Kickstands up at noon.

The $15 per person cost includes a beef on weck dinner. Dinner will be served to the public starting at 1 p.m. Deputy Jason Beicher and his K9 will be providing demonstrations. ‘Step Up for Autism’ event Saturday

The Resource Center will hold its fifth annual “Step Up for Autism” event on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The walk begins at The Resource Center Administrative Offices, 200 Dunham Ave., Jamestown. The registration fee is $20. Registration will be from 9:15 to 10 a.m. At 10:15 a.m., the 1.5 mile walk begins to Lucille Ball Memorial Park on Chautauqua Lake. At 11:30 a.m. there will be lunch, followed by games, a silent auction, a cake auction, face painting, etc. Money raised from Step Up for Autism stays in Chautauqua County and supports the TRC SUCCESS Program (for children and young adults who are on the autism spectrum) and the Sibshops, which are a type of support group for children who have a sibling with special needs.

The Dunkirk Camp and Conference Center will hold a Walk-a-thon and Chiavetta’s barbecue on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. James UCC, 76 Main St., Hamburg. Participants can register for the walk online at www.dunkirkcc. com. There is no registration fee, but walkers are asked to bring sponsors. The event will be held rain or shine. Chiavetta’s chicken barbecue will be available at a cost of $9 per ticket from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Proceeds support the DCC Send a Kid to Camp Program.

She taught high school English for 26 years before her retirement in 2005 from Chautauqua Lake Central School. Her novel showcases the area.

Busti Apple Harvest Festival Sunday

The Busti Apple Harvest Festival will be held Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Busti Mill and Festival Grounds, Lawson Road and Mill Street in Busti. Admission is $3, with children under 12 admitted free. See the working mill, or enjoy a stagecoach ride. Children’s Concert Series starts Saturday

The first of the Children’s Concerts Series presented by the State University of New York at Fredonia School of Music will take place Saturday at the Dunkirk Free Library, 536 Central Ave., Dunkirk. There will be two half-hour performances, one at 10:30 and the other at 11:30 a.m.

The concerts are designed to introduce children from infants to 6 year olds to musical instruments. Families are encouraged to bring blankets or carpet squares so that the children can sit close to the musicians.

Gas price falls

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 0.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.59/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has fallen 3.4 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.34/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 20.0 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 5.6 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 8.1 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 15.0 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

There will be a period of time on Sunday when your Electronic Benefits Transaction card will not work for cash or food purchases, or to withdraw cash. This EBT downtime will begin around 12 a.m. on Sunday and could last until 5 p.m. that day.

You will need to plan your cash and food purchases, and cash withdrawals accordingly. The downtime is necessary while New York State changes EBT vendors.

After the conversion, your current EBT card will continue to work, and there is no need to replace your card. There will be no impact on your ability to access your medical benefits.

Homecoming Parade

Dunkirk High School’s homecoming parade is Friday at 6:15 p.m.

There will be a period of time on Sunday when your Electronic Benefits Transaction card will not work for cash or food purchases, or to withdraw cash. This EBT downtime will begin around 12 a.m. on Sunday and could last until 5 p.m. that day. You will need to plan your cash and food purchases, and cash withdrawals accordingly. The downtime is necessary while New York State changes EBT vendors. After the conversion, your current EBT card will continue to work, and there is no need to replace your card. There will be no impact on your ability to access your medical benefits.

Gas prices down

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 0.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.60/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has fallen 4.2 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.39/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 21.2 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 7.2 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 6.7 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 14.9 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

DHS homecoming parade Friday

Dunkirk High School’s homecoming parade will be held Friday, Sept. 19 at 6:15 p.m.

Chautauqua County History series

on 1800s planned

Elements of Chautauqua County history in the 1800s will be explored in a special non-credit series offered Wednesdays, this week through Oct. 1, at James-town Community College’s Jamestown Campus.

Leon Down Home Days

The Leon Down Home Days are scheduled for Sept. 27. Rotary blood screening event is Saturday

The 30th annual Rotary Blood Screening program, with the assistance of Brooks Memorial Hospital, will be from 6:30 to 9:20 a.m. Saturday in Fredonia High School. The clinical blood test, including the colon-rectal take home test kit and the T4 Thyroxine or thyroid test will be $45. A PSA test is $25 more.

There also are free blood pressure screenings. Test results are sent to your physician within a week.

Bike ride Sept. 21

On Sept. 21 in Sherman, Christ Our Hope Parish is hosting a bike ride along the flow of French Creek from Sherman to the shore of Findley Lake to benefit the pilgrimage to World Youth Day 2016 in Poland. Riders may choose from several routes ranging from 9 to 47 miles. All routes include hydration and snack stops with lunch in Sherman at the end of your ride.

Registration is $20 prior to today and $25 on Sept. 21. The ride begins at 9 a.m. Registration is from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m. at St. Isaac Jogues Church, 119 Miller St. in Sherman.

Blood screening is Saturday

The 30th annual Rotary Blood Screening program, with the assistance of Brooks Memorial Hospital, will be from 6:30 to 9:20 a.m. Saturday in the Fredonia High School. The clinical blood test, including the colon-rectal take home test kit and the T4 Thyroxine or thyroid test will be $45. A PSA test is an additional $25.

There also are free blood pressure screenings and test results are sent to your personal physician within one week.

City’s CAPER review set

The city of Dunkirk will hold a community participation meeting to present the Fiscal Year 2013 Consolidated Annual Performance and Evaluation Report that was submitted to the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The public meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 9 in the Mayor’s Conference Room on the second floor of City Hall, 342 Central Ave., Dunkirk.

As a grantee of CDBG funds, the city of Dunkirk annually develops a CAPER to report accomplishments achieved during the previous Community Development Block Grant program year. Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities Director George Spanos has announced the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day scheduled for Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Chautauqua County Department of Public Facilities Building on 454 North Work St. in Falconer has been canceled.

“Due to a change in contractors, we are in the process of rescheduling the second Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day for 2014,” said Spanos. “The drop-off events are a great opportunity for residents to safely dispose of hazardous items around their homes for free and once we have the event rescheduled we will be sure to inform residents.”

The Community Blood Bank will be holding two drives in the local area. The public is invited to help out the local community and local hospitals with a blood donation.

Silver Creek Fire Dept. run report

The Silver Creek Fire Department has released its run report for the time period between Aug. 5 and Sept. 2.

According to the report, there were 17 EMS calls and two fire-related calls in the village, with no accidents reported in the village. A total of 20 EMS calls were reported in the town of Hanover outside village limits, with four accidents and no fires within the same geographical area. Mutual aid calls amounted to one in Forestville, two in Sheridan and one in the east town of Dunkirk.

Total calls amounted to 47 during that time period.

Around 70 flooded basements have been pumped so far this year as a courtesy by the fire department.

DFD August run report

The city of Dunkirk Fire Department went on 152 runs in August, according to Fire Chief Keith Ahlstrom. Included were 119 emergency medical service runs resulting in 50 billed transports to Brooks Memorial Hospital. The department also responded to 16 still alarms, 12 box alarms and five mutual aid calls.

Algal bloom seminar to air on Channel 5

Access Channel 5 will air an algal bloom seminar which was recently held at the Hewes BOCES Center in Ashville. The seminar was hosted by the Chautauqua Lake Association, Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy and Jamestown Audubon Society.

The program will air at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day beginning Saturday with the last airing on Sept. 12.

Scott Kishbaugh presented the talk, which included a power point presentation. Kishbaugh is the bureau chief for the Lakes Monitoring and Assessment Section of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Bureau of Water Assessment Management.

“Algal blooms are becoming a large concern for residents and visitors of Chautauqua County,” said Doug Conroe, president of the CLA. According to Conroe, extensive harmful algal bloom data has been collected on Chautauqua Lake for the last three years.

Chautauqua County Walk to End Alzheimer’s Saturday

The Chautauqua County Alzheimer’s Walk will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6.

The walk ceremony starts at 10 a.m. and the walk begins at 10:15 a.m. at the Turner Community Center at Chautauqua Institution, 4840 W. Lake Road (Route 394).

Roughly 19,000 people are impacted by Alzheimer’s or related dementia in Chautauqua County. The Walk provides funds to sustain the free resources of the Alzheimer’s Association WNY including educational programs and care consultations; a portion is also dedicated to research. Right now, there is no way to prevent, slow, or cure this fatal disease. Around 400 participants are expected to walk Saturday.

Nylon pinwheel flowers in four colors representing reasons to walk are “planted” at the site, and then retrieved as a remembrance of this moving and fun day, often after messages are written on them. Chapter staff and board members, as well as committee volunteers will be on-site from 7 a.m. until the walk is over, usually by noon.

Fredonia Complete Streets group workshop Thursday

As part of an Active Community Enhancements mini-grant, the Fredonia Complete Streets Task Force group will hold a workshop Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the village hall.

Various topics that will be discussed include: promoting safety for all forms of transportation; beautifying the village; and improving foot traffic, commerce and tourism.

Representatives from the state Department of Transportation, Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation and Chautauqua Home Rehabilitation and Improvement Corp. will be there to discuss the process of receiving grants to assist with projects associated with Complete Streets.

Mark Russell to appear on ‘Chautauqua People’

Mark Russell will be the next person interviewed on Chautauqua People.

Comedian and satirist Russell has been performing political humor around the world for over 50 years. A native of Buffalo, he lived in Jamestown for one year of his childhood. Russell is well-known for his PBS specials and for performing at the Chautauqua Institution and the Fredonia Opera House. He spends his summers at Chautauqua and continues to perform throughout the U.S. He will be interviewed by Ira Cooperman.

Craft and farm show

The Cattaraugus County Volunteer Fire Police Association is sponsoring a craft and farm show Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Gowanda Fire Hall, 230 Aldrich St. in Gowanda. The event is open to the public. There will be food and beverages available to purchase and enjoy. The event will feature a farmers’ market, crafts and vendors. There will be no live animals. Tables are available for a cost of $10 for an 8′ space. The fire department will provide tables. Vendors can set up after 7 a.m., with doors opening at 9 a.m. Other attractions include raffles, 50-50s, baskets and gift cards. Patrons can purchase a brick for the garden in memory of a loved one. Forestville board changes meeting date

The Forestville Village Board will not hold its regularly scheduled Sept. 9 meeting due to primary elections held in the village hall from noon to 9 p.m. The board will meet on Sept. 23. At that time it will open bids for the three parcels of land declared surplus.

Blood screening Sept. 13

The 30th annual Rotary Blood Screening program, with the assistance of Brooks Memorial Hospital, will be from 6:30 to 9:20 a.m. Sept. 13 in Fredonia High School. The clinical blood test, including the colon-rectal take home test kit and the T4 Thyroxine or thyroid test will be $45. A PSA test is $25 more.

There also are free blood pressure screenings and test results are sent to your personal physician within one week.

Rummage sale

in South Dayton

The South Dayton United Methodist Church, 328 Pine St., South Dayton, is having a rummage sale Friday and Saturday. It runs Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A bag sale is scheduled Saturday at noon. There will be a bake sale both days.

End of summer concert

Hanover Democrats make nominations

for Silver Creek seats

The Hanover Democrats held their caucus Aug. 19. The purpose of the caucus, held at the Hanover Town Hall, was to open nominations for two trustee positions in Silver Creek.

Anthony Pearl of Andrus Street and Nancy Karmazyn of Burgess Street were nominated and accepted the endorsement of the Democrats.

Pearl is currently a trustee on the village board. He was appointed to the seat held by Mayor Nick Piccolo when Piccolo was elected mayor. Pearl is now seeking a two-year term.

Karmazyn has accepted the request of the Democrat-ic Party to run for a two-year trustee term. She has not previously held office.

Having endorsed candidates for both trustee seats that will be open, the Silver Creek caucus adjourned.

Dunkirk High School plans meet and greet

Dunkirk High School will host a meet and greet event on Friday. Parents, relatives and community members are welcome to attend the event from 2 to 4 p.m. Besides high school staff members, community agencies also will be on hand. There also will be food and beverages for those who attend.

Chautauqua County Bridge No. 829 on Waits Corners Road, between County Route 18 and Bates Road, in Sherman is now open.

Dunkirk Town Board workshop and special meeting Thursday

The Dunkirk Town Board will hold a workshop and special meeting at 6 p.m. on Thursday, at the Town Hall, 4737 Willow Road to begin budget review and conduct any other lawful business to come before the town board.

Valley Historical Society meets Tuesday

The next regular meeting of the Valley Historical Society will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Museum at the corner of Main and Lester streets in Sinclairville.

Members will be finalizing plans for the 15th Annual History Fair Sept. 13, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. in Sinclairville.

First Friday Lunch Bunch begins Friday

The Audubon Center & Sanctuary’s “First Friday Lunch Bunch” will take place Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Center, located at 1600 Riverside Road, Jamestown. The program will be “A Bird in the Hand,” by Terry LeBaron and Jennifer Schlick, followed by BYO brown bag lunch and conversation. Audubon provides coffee and tea. Silver Creek Retired Teachers’ luncheon

Dunkirk Historical Society house tour

The Dunkirk Historical Society is sponsoring it second annual house tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 13. Five very diverse houses plus the historic “Carnegie” Public Library will be showcased. Tickets are $15 and available at the Dunkirk Library, P&G Foods, the Dunkirk Development Office, The Historical Museum near Washington Park and at the Historical Museum booth on Dunkirk Heritage Days near the Clarion Hotel. All proceeds benefit the programs of the Dunkirk Historical Museum.
