St. Joseph’s Gowanda

community meal planned for Aug. 18

St. Joseph’s Gowanda community meal will take place Saturday, Aug. 18 from 4 to 6 p.m., at 26 Erie Ave., Gowanda. The committee will be serving baked chicken, macaroni, salad, pickle, roll, watermelon and beverages. All are welcome.

Need Garden Help?

The Chautauqua Country Master Gardeners of the Cornell Cooperative Extension offers free gardening advice to the public weekly until the end of September. Also, PH soil tests are available. Contact the gardeners Wednesdays from noon to 2 p.m. except holidays at 664-9502 ext. 224, or walk in at the Frank W. Bratt AG Center at 3542 Turner Road, Jamestown. “Cornell Cooperative Extension…we put research-based knowledge to work for you.”

Ghost Stories by the Fire

Join author Paul Leone for a spooky and exciting night of storytelling by the campfire at Long Point State Park.

Leone is a Chautauqua County native, and has authored and co-authored books on the history of the area, as well as historical ghost tales. On Saturday evening, he will be sharing a few of his favorite historically-based ghost stories.

The fun begins at 7 p.m. and will run approximately one hour. Stick around for S’mores after the program. Attendees should meet at the trailhead to the Point. Program is free to the public.

Literacy Volunteers plan book sale for Thursday to Saturday

Looking for a good book to read? 21 East Bookstore has an eclectic selection of used books. Enjoy a good book and support a worthy cause. The LVCC Bookstore is located at 21 E. Second St., Dunkirk and is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Proceeds benefit adult literacy.

Sheridan Post 6390 VFW Auxiliary bake sale Friday

The Auxiliary for the Sheridan VFW Post 6390 will hold a bake sale this Friday in the lobby of the VFW Post, located at 2556 Main Road in Sheridan.

The bake sale will begin at 4:30 p.m. and continue during dining hours at the regular Friday night fish fry. All Auxiliary members are asked to donate baked goods for the sale.

Chadwick Bay Chapter NYS Women, Inc. plans summer sizzler event

Chadwick Bay Chapter NYS Women, Inc. is sponsoring its third annual summer sizzler crafts and vendor event on Sunday, Aug. 19 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Fredonia Masonic Forest Lodge, 321 E. Main St. The event is open to the public and features 25 + crafters and vendors. There will be something for everyone. Features include a Chinese auction, crafts, nutrition, skin care, sweet treats, drink mixes, jewelry, makeup, essential oils, clothing, storage solutions and much more.

Gowanda Moose Lodge cruise on in cars and bikes event set for Thursday

Gowanda Moose Lodge will hold its next in a series of “cruise on in cars and bikes” Thursday, Aug. 16, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 201 Aldrich St., Gowanda. Food and drink specials will be available. The event benefits the “Raise the Roof” project.

Chautauqua County Department of Social Services (Services Division) retirees’ picnic

The Chautauqua County Department of Social Services (Services Division) retirees will hold their annual picnic today. The picnic will be at the Carlson Community Building, Lakeside Park, 50 W. Lake Road, Mayville from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring a dish to share, own beverage and a lawn chair. Tableware will be provided. The picnic will be held “rain or shine.” Call Linda at 499-7421 if you have any questions.
