Portland fire commissioners set January meetings

PORTLAND — The annual re-organizational meeting of the Board of Commissioners of the Portland Fire District will be Monday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 pm at the Fire Station located a 6481 W. Main St.

The regular monthly meeting will immediately follow this meeting. In addition on Jan. 21 at 6:30 pm there will be a workshop session of the board to review the district insurance coverage for 2019. As with all meetings of the district they are open to the public for attendance.

Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony sets application deadline

The Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony application deadline is Friday, Jan. 11, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. There are openings in beginning, intermediate, and advanced youth orchestras that rehearse Friday afternoons (for beginners) and Saturdays at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Lakewood. Lakeshore Humane Society’s weekly Open Hours Wednesday

The Lakeshore Humane Society will hold Open Hours at its Adoption Center Wednesday, Jan. 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. Open Hours will be held each Wednesday evening to give the public a consistent mid-week opportunity to meet the cats and dogs in need of caring homes, as well as ask questions and see the facility. The center is located at 431 E. Chestnut St., Dunkirk.

If unable to come on Wednesday, call 672-1991 to arrange an appointment to see the dogs and cats awaiting adoption, or come to the LHS Adoption Day on Jan. 19. (One must be 21 years of age or older to adopt a pet).

While at the LHS Adoption Center, check out the “Cat’s Meow” Boutique, where one can find pet-related gift items, while supporting the Lakeshore Humane Society!

DISCOVER DRAGONS! at Barker Library Jan. 12

Come to Darwin R. Barker Library, 7 Day St., Fredonia, for a special storytime! DISCOVER DRAGONS! on Saturday, Jan. 12 from 11 a.m. to noon. They’re fierce! They fly! They breathe fire!

Join in for stories, a video and a craft and talk about everyone’s favorite mythical creature.

Feel free to wear your favorite costume, t-shirt or other dragon-related garb.

All children are welcome. No registration necessary.

Sons of American Legion Squad 59 plan to meet Tuesday

The Sons of American Legion Squad 59 will be holding their monthly meeting Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. at Post 59, 156 E. Main St., Fredonia.

Pat Mleczko, Clinic Director of the Dunkirk VA Community-Based Outpatient Clinic will be speaking to the group about the many services the VA provides and specifically Women’s Health Services offered at the VA of Western New York Healthcare System.

All SAL are encouraged to attend the meetings, which are held on the second Tuesday of every month.

Evans Garden Club meeting Tuesday

The Evans Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 8. The meeting will be held at the Angola Library, 34 N. Main St. Angola. Danielle Pecoraro, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited will give a presentation about local birds and birdhouses. She is very knowledgeable about wildlife and nature. All are invited to attend.

Community Sing-Along planned for Jan. 9

A Community Sing-Along will be held Wednesday, Jan. 9 from 7 to 8:15 p.m. at the Fredonia Grange No. 1, 58 W. Main St., Fredonia. Join in a good old campfire sing-along in an indoor setting. All voices are welcome; the event is free for all. For details, call Joe at 679-8426.

Preschool Storytime at Ahira Hall Memorial Library Tuesday

Preschool Storytime with Mrs. Westin and Mrs. Raymond will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 8, in the Ahira Hall Memorial Library, 37 W. Main St., Brocton. This program is designed for children ages 2 1/2 to 5 years old. Read stories, make a craft and sing songs about winter.

Gowanda Fire Department plans spaghetti dinner Jan. 16

The Gowanda Fire Department will hold an “all you can eat” spaghetti dinner on Wednesday, Jan. 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Gowanda American Legion, 100 Legion Drive, Gowanda. Pre-sale tickets are available from Gowanda Fire Department and Auxiliary members at a cost of adults $7.50 and children $4.50. At the door, dinner costs are adults $8, children $4.50. Take-outs are available. There will be homemade desserts.

Dunkirk Citizens Advisory Board meeting Wednesday

The Dunkirk Citizens Advisory Board monthly meeting will be held Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Conference Room on the second floor.
