Dunkirk schools send message with signs
The district Board of Education approved the new signs for school buildings Jan. 11. They were approved in conjunction with a new playground near Dunkirk Middle School. The playground is still unfinished because equipment is not delivered yet.
However, workers installed the signs Tuesday morning. They are two-sided digital boards on brick bases.
The estimated combined cost of the signs and playground is $800,000. It will get paid for with state Education Department grants.
Tim Abbey, district buildings and grounds director, said in April that a lot of work went into the proper sites for the signs, to maximize readability.
The bases for the signs were installed months ago and sat throughout the summer as reminders of what was coming.
