Thirty years ago — 1991

The replica 17th century sailing ship “Sea Lion” is under wraps at her winter anchorage in Jamestown. Both the “Sea Lion” and the paddlewheel steamer “Chautauqua Belle” are spending the offseason tied up at the docks at the Old Board Landing on the Chadakoin River in Jamestown. They are part of the Chautauqua Lake Historic Vessels fleet.

Forty years ago — 1981

The 125th anniversary celebration of St. John’s United Church of Christ is being observed this month with special services at the worship site. Pastors participating were the Revs. James Doellefeld, Veldon Grasmick, Merl Schiffman and James Leamon. Greeters were Mr. and Mrs. John Richter, who wore authentic 19th century clothing. A “special tribute” was sung to Mrs. Pearl Ludwig, first woman council president in the 125-year history of the church.

Fifty years ago — 1971

Newell McCroskey, town of Dunkirk supervisor, will chair the newly-formed Industrial Development Agency in the town. Serving with him are Robert H. Altwies, town councilman; Philip J. Cenedella, Charles L. Hoch and Miss Dorothy Klajbor.
