Fredonia back on track
SPRINGVILLE — The Fredonia Hillbillies (2-3, 0-2) team got back on track Saturday afternoon with a 10-2 victory over Springville in a nonleague baseball game.
“It all started on the mound,” Fredonia coach Vince Gullo said.
Junior Jayden Whitfield got his first varsity start and did not disappoint, working 4.1 innings and allowing only one earned run.
“It’s nice to get back on the winning side,” Gullo said.
The lineup looked a little different for Fredonia due to the nonleague game, but that did not slow down the Hillbillies at all. In fact, Fredonia scored its highest run total for the season, recorded its most hits with eight and matched its lowest runs allowed.
“Our second string is not far behind our first string, and a number of those guys did a real nice job for us today,” Gullo said.
It did not take long for Fredonia to take the lead.
Leadoff hitter Simon Davis led off the game with a walk, stole second and was later driven home on Nick Frazier’s line-drive single. Springville was quick to tie the game on a first-and third delayed steal.
Joe Gullo, who had a very productive day as the designated hitter for Fredonia, going 2-3 with an RBI and three runs scored, led off the second inning with a ground-rule double. Gullo later scored giving Fredonia the lead back once and for all.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Hillbillies added a run, and in the bottom of the fourth Whitfield retired Springville on three pitches.
Micah Davis led off the fifth inning with a double off the right-field fence. Simon Davis backed that up with a single to left, putting Fredonia runners on the corners with no outs, and Trevor Persch picked up an RBI on a groundout, pushing Fredonia’s lead to 4-1.
After back-to-back hits by Springville, Coach Gullo looked to Frazier, who pitched 2.2 innings and allowed just one run to earn the save.
Meanwhile, the Hillbillies plated a run in the sixth on a Jake Helmer sacrifice fly and put the game away with a five-run seventh, sparked by a double by Simon Davis and an RBI double by Helmer.
