BUFFALO — The Fredonia State softball team split a doubleheader at Buffalo State on Friday. The Blue Devils managed to hold on for the 5-4 win in Game 1, but fell 8-6 in Game 2.

Game 1

Down 3-2 in the seventh, Fredonia State rallied for three runs in the top of the inning to take the lead.

A trio of Buffalo State errors in the inning set the stage for the rally. Emily Chelius drove home the first run, Alyssa Piniewski who had reached on an error, was advanced into scoring position with a wild pitch.

Megan Guidry pinch ran for Chelius and Nicole Kumro then reached on a fielding error. Maria Caviris hit a single for the Blue Devils to load the bases.

With the bases loaded Guidry, attempted to advance home on a wild pitch to give the Bengals hope of ending the inning with two outs. However, Alyssa Santiago had other plans for the inning. Santiago delivered the final blow, doubling to centerfield to score both Kumro and Caviris for the 5-3 lead.

Buffalo State attempted to make some seventh-inning magic of its own, but only could muster up one run off a double by Kayla Wolinski.

With the tying run in scoring position, Chelius managed to work herself out of the jam getting the final two batters to pop out for her sixth win of the season in the circle.

Game 2

Nicole Kumro got the scoring going with a grand slam in the top of the fourth to stake the Devils to a 4-0 lead. But Buffalo State scored four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and it would be too much to overcome.

Santiago, Caviris, and Amber Piniewski each finished with a pair of hits. Santiago added a double.

The Devils are now 7-19 overall and 4-6 in SUNYAC play. Buffalo State is now 9-17 overall and 3-7 in conference.
