TOWSON, Md. — The Haudenosaunee Nationals ended the 2022 World Lacrosse Women’s Championship on a sour note with two losses in a row, to Japan on Friday and then Czechia on Saturday. However, the overall performance for Haudenosaunee was a great one as it improved its 12th place finish from the 2017 worlds to an 8th place finish.

Worlds wrapped up on Saturday night with the United States defeating Canada 11-8 for its ninth gold and its first on home soil. Earlier in the day, Czechia scored a late goal to beat Haudenosaunee 12-11 for 7th place, Japan topped Israel 13-4 for 5th place and England knocked off Australia 8-7 in triple overtime for the bronze medal.

In the first quarter of the 7th place game, it looked like Czechia would win in a blowout as it raced out to a 7-1 lead. Haudenosaunee came alive in the second quarter and a big part of it was Gowanda High School graduate Miya Scanlan. Scanlan who has made her gifts known to the lacrosse world at the tournament continued to share them on Saturday, as unleashed another four goal performance.

Scanlan scored twice in the second quarter and goals from Lois Garlow and Jayln Jimerson made it a ballgame at halftime. In the third quarter, Scanlan added another two goals and her fourth tied the score at 9-9 with just eight seconds left.

In the fourth quarter, Czechia’s Isabella Martire scored her fourth and fifth goal to regain an 11-9 lead, but late goals from Jimerson then Wynter Jock made it look like overtime was on the horizon.

Any chance of overtime was snuffed out with 1:20 left in the game when Anna Lottmann scored her fourth goal of the game to give Czechia the lead 12-11. Czechia won the final draw and played keep away until Haudenosaunee was able to get it back with nine seconds left, but by then it was too late.

Scanlan’s four goals put her at a total of 23 for the tournament and tied her for fifth overall in goals with Charlotte North of the United States. Scanlan added three assists for a total of 26 points in her eight games and Gowanda High School lacrosse coach Lottie Gill finished with one assist in the tournament and picked up nine groundballs, the final two coming against Czechia. Jimerson matched Scanlan in points with 11 goals and 15 assists.
