Another week leads to more uncharted territory for the Gowanda softball team.

Ten days after capturing the program’s first Section VI championship and seven days following their first Far West Regional title, the Panthers will take on Section IV champion Edison in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C semifinals at 6 p.m. today on Field 1 at the Moriches Athletic Complex on Long Island.

Gowanda improved to 16-7 on the season with last Friday’s 5-0 regional victory over Section V champion Bolivar-Richburg after beating Chautauqua Lake 4-1 in the sectional title game four days earlier.

The Panthers’ offense has been powered by freshman phenom Addison Kota, who is hitting .529 with 12 doubles, five triples, six home runs, 20 RBIs and 32 runs scored this spring.

Senior Wassy Stevens is hitting .400 with five doubles, a triple, 13 RBIs and 26 runs scored; senior Jada Geiger is hitting .417 with five doubles, two triples, 12 RBIs and 19 runs scored; and junior Ella Luther is hitting .375 with five doubles, 19 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

Edison is 17-4 on the season and has scored 234 runs while allowing 47 in those 21 games.

The Spartans beat Notre Dame (Elmira) 2-1 in the Section IV championship game May 27 before topping Section III champion Cooperstown 6-1 in this past Friday’s state quarterfinal.

Junior Gabby Milazzo has handled the lion’s share of pitching duties for Edison, striking out 113 in 83 innings while allowing 30 runs (18 earned) and holding opposing batters to a .204 average against.

Milazzo also leads the Spartans with a .483 batting average that includes three doubles and two triples. She has driven in 24 runs and scored 15.

Junior Maliyah McIver is Edison’s top power threat at the plate with five home runs, three doubles and two triples that have led to a .370 average. She has driven in 19 runs and scored 18.

Sophomore Emily Aiello is batting .408 with five doubles, two triples and three home runs while driving in 20 runs and scoring 20. Sophomore Kailey Ripley has driven in a team-high 25 runs while junior Brianna Korsky and sophomore Charlee Stroman have both scored a team-high 22 runs.

Edison is a two-time state champion, previously winning Class C titles in 2019 and 2014.

The other 6 p.m. Friday semifinal will feature Section II champion Chatham against Section IX champion SS Seward.

The Panthers beat Greenwich 6-1 in the Section II championship game before an 11-3 victory over Section X St. Lawrence in a subregional at Luther Forest in Malta last Wednesday and a 12-2 win over Section VII champion Northeastern Clinton last Friday at SUNY Plattsburgh’s Cardinal Park.

Against St. Lawrence, sophomore outfielder Anna Friedman went 4 for 4 with three RBIs; senior catcher Olive Mountain had a home run and a single with two RBIs; and senior pitcher Emily Mesick struck out 11 and didn’t walk a batter. Sophomore outfielder Addison Perry and Mountain were Chatham’s top bats against Northeastern Clinton. Mountain had three hits and four RBIs while Perry had three hits and four runs scored. Mesick struck out nine in the game.

Chatham won a Class B state title in 2012.

SS Seward advanced to the state semifinals by beating Section I Tuckahoe 12-1 in a subregional at North Rockland High School and Section VIII Friends Academy 22-0 in last Saturday’s state quarterfinal at Monroe Woodbury High School. In that game, the Spartans scored 16 runs in the second inning.

SS Seward is led by seniors Kailey Stolowski, the Section IX Class C Player of the Year, and Kaitlin Stolowski, who was also named to the Class C All-Section IX team.

Saturday’s championship game will take place at 2 p.m.

Starting at $3.50/week.
