County Municipal Directory updated

The Chautauqua County Municipal Directory has been updated and includes officials who will be taking office on Wednesday.

The Board of Elections endeavors to have the municipal directory up to date at all times for federal, state, county, city, town and village officials. This directory should be your quick real-time resource for elected officials and is always available at www.votechautauqua.com .

Non-credit courses at JCC North County Center

Non-credit courses for personal and professional enrichment begin soon at Jamestown Community College’s North County Center in Dunkirk.

Courses include: Barrier Precautions, 1-4 p.m., Jan. 8 ($30); Waterscapes in Watercolor, Tuesdays, Jan. 21-Feb. 25, 6-8:30 p.m. ($85); Drawing 102, 6-8:30 p.m., Wednesdays, Jan. 29- March 5 ($85); and Mat Pilates, 7-8 p.m. either Tuesdays, Jan. 21-April 15, Thursdays, Jan. 23-April 17, or Tuesdays and Thursdays, Jan. 21-April 17 ($60).

A point/insurance reduction course is offered from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Jan. 11. The fee is $35.

Registration is open

for ice skating classes at SUNY Fredonia

Ice skating classes are being offered at SUNY Fredonia’s Steele Hall. Beginner skaters and advanced skaters are welcome. Classes run for 10 weeks, and there are two different series to choose from. Sunday afternoon classes at 1 p.m. start this Sunday. Tuesday night classes at 6:15 p.m. start Jan. 14.

Housing Choice Voucher Program

The New York State Homes and Community Renewal will close its Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program waiting list for Chautauqua County effective Wednesday. The final date applications will be accepted by Chautauqua Opportunities Inc. until today.

How to dispose of Christmas trees in city

Dunkirk residents wishing to dispose of Christmas trees may do so at the Central Garage on Lucas Avenue by placing them on the brush pile.

Residents can leave trees at the curb and call the garage at 366-4411 and leave the address and they will be picked up when personnel is available.

Pomfret to hold

reorganizational

meeting Thursday

The Pomfret Town Board will hold its annual reorganization meeting on Thursday at 3 p.m. in the town hall.

City Hall closed Wednesday

Dunkirk City Hall will be closed Wednesday in observance of New Year’s Day.

There will be no rubbish pickup on Wednesday. Residents in District C (Wednesday collection zone) will have their rubbish picked up on Thursday. Residents in District A (Thursday collection zone) will have their rubbish picked up on Friday. Residents in District D (Friday collection zone) will have their rubbish picked up on Saturday.

County Planning

Board meeting Jan. 7

The Chautauqua County Planning Board’s monthly meeting will be held on Jan. 7 at 4 p.m. at the County of Chautauqua Industrial Development Agency’s Office at 200 Harrison St. in Jamestown.

City calendars

City of Dunkirk calendars for 2014 and 2015 curbside collection of rubbish, recycling, brush and other items, are being printed for insertion and distribution in the OBSERVER. Due to holiday observances, the distribution will be delayed until early 2014, but the electronic version of the calendar is immediately available at the City’s website, dunkirktoday.com.

The mayor and the director of public works thank all city residents for following the procedures outlined in the calendars, and they specially request that residents increase their participation in the zero-sort recycling curbside pickup on alternate Mondays. Drive-in zero-sort recycling is available in the morning to early afternoon Mondays through most Saturdays at the City Recycling Center on West Lucas Avenue.

The Fredonia Central School Alumni Hall of Fame Committee is accepting nominations for candidates for the Alumni Hall of Fame. This distinguished award honors individuals whose deeds and character exemplify outstanding achievement in their life’s work and/or service to their communities. The honoree’s spirit and leadership are worthy of recognition and have inspired praise and gratitude among his or her peers.

Pomfret residents should not plow

snow into roadways

Pomfret Highway Superintendent Dan Bigelow would like to remind residents of the town that it is illegal to blow or plow snow from their driveways into the roads.

Gas prices have risen

Average retail gasoline prices in New York have risen 2.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.67/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 6,118 gas outlets in New York. This compares with the national average that has increased 4.9 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.29/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in New York during the past week, prices Sunday were 4.3 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 5.9 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 4.0 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 2.2 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

Silver Creek village office holiday hours

The Silver Creek Clerk’s Office will be open from 8 a.m. to noon on New Year’s Eve and will be closed New Year’s Day.

Fredonia Post Office open to 5 p.m. Tuesday

All Post Offices will be open New Year’s Eve, Tuesday, but most will close at noon.

Fredonia Post Office, 21 Day St., is open to 5 p.m.

Regular mail delivery for Tuesday will be unaffected by the change. Mail deposited in collection boxes will be retrieved by the last established collection time, or by noon, whichever is earlier.

All post offices will be closed Wednesday and only Express Mail will be delivered. Regular mail delivery and post office hours will resume Thursday.

Revised hours will be posted at each post office. Customers may call 1-800-ASK-USPS for information about specific post offices.

Dunkirk Rec Center activities

AM Walk – The Recreation Center will be open mornings for an adult walking program. Enjoy a morning walk Monday through Friday; 7:30 to 10 a.m. You can put in miles of comfortable walking while the cold blows around outside. Session runs January through March. Fee: is $1 per session. Punch cards are available for $10, which includes 16 walks.

Playday – Come bring your kids to the Rec Center and have them play with new Christmas toys, kick a ball around, or just run around. It’s too cold to play outside, so stay warm inside for Playday. This program will run Monday through Friday during winter vacation, and Monday-Wednesday-Friday starting in January. Fee is $1 per child. Parents are free.

Westfield village offices closed for New Year’s

The village offices in Westfield will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday in observance of the New Year’s Holiday.

Rental apps for Russell Joy Park to start being accepted Thursday

The Fredonia-Pomfret Recreation Department will begin accepting Russell Joy Park pavilion rental applications for the summer 2014 season beginning on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. at the Recreation Department office on the second floor of Fredonia Village Hall.

Applications will only be accepted from Fredonia or Pomfret residents throughout January.

Residents from neighboring communities will be able to submit rental applications beginning in February.

Russell Joy Park has three pavilions available for public rental from April 1 through Oct. 31.

CTASC meets Monday in Mayville

There will be a meeting of the Chautauqua Tobacco Asset Securitization Corporation on Monday at 8:35 a.m. in the county executive’s conference room on the third floor of the Gerace Office Building in Mayville.

CTASC was formed by the County of Chautauqua in 2000 to securitize the county’s share of the settlement proceeds of tobacco related litigation involving numerous states and local governments and the tobacco industry. The purpose of the meeting will be to consider and approve the refinancing of a portion or all of the CTASC bonds to take advantage of current market conditions.

The Chadwick Bay has finalized plans for the Getaway Weekend at the Dunkirk Clarion Hotel. Please be advised that the dates are March 7-9. Activities include a networking party on Friday night, a shopping expo on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and all-day pampering sessions. The longtime favorite water aerobics is back on the schedule. A women’s health seminar, basket weaving classes, no sew blankets and investment strategy are also being offered in the afternoon.

Hanover office hours

Office hours for the Hanover town clerk’s office will change. On Friday the office will close at 4 p.m. and on New Year’s Eve, the office will close at 12:30 p.m.

Gas prices rise

The ‘F’ Word to appear on Access Channel 5

The F-Word is a magazine show produced by the SUNY Fredonia advanced TV studio class. Hosted by Nick Nieves and Lyndsey Rynders. Featured guests for show #5, called “The Local Music Scene” include radio personality Alex Ziccardi, host of “Local Lowdown” and a special performance from the band “Mooses.”

The program will air on Access Channel 5 at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day beginning on Saturday with the last airing on Jan. 3.

Access Channel 5 is available to cable viewers in the Chautauqua, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Sherman, and Westfield areas.

Viewers should note that all area public access channels have been dropped from Time Warner’s analog service, but can be received on digital service with a converter at their legacy channel assignment, or on a QAM digital television (channel varies by system) that has been recently autoscanned. Programming from Access Channel 5 (channel 21.4 on a QAM digital TV) is also aired each evening in the Town of Hanover on cable channel 12 (channel 98.3 on a QAM digital TV).

Fred Croscut to appear on Senior Report

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Fred Croscut as the guest on Saturday’s television program. Croscut, an outgoing Chautauqua County Legislator, will discuss various topics. The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturdays. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities.

Limited operation Friday for County

government offices

Chautauqua County government offices will have limited operations Friday. Some telephone service, email and operations software will be unavailable. Residents should keep scheduled appointments, but “walk-in” service may be unavailable in many offices. This affects most all departments and locations.

Emergency services (911), CARTS bus routes, County Airport operations, County Home telephone service, and in-person counter service at Division of Motor Vehicles offices should not be affected. Contact the County switchboard at 753-4000 with any questions.

All Buffalo area Post Offices open Christmas Eve

All Buffalo area Post Offices will be open today, but all will close at noon except the Buffalo Main Post Office as 1200 William St., open until 5 p.m.

Regular mail delivery and blue collection boxes having final collection times before noon will not be affected by these changes today. However, collection boxes with final collection times scheduled after noon will be collected by noon.

Revised hours will be posted at each Post Office. Customers may call 1-800-ASK-USPS for information about specific Post Office hours.

Restricted Highways

Poland Center Road, between State Route 394 and State Route 62 in the Town of Poland is closed due to flooding. This closure shall remain in effect until barricades are removed.

Water Street, between State Route 394 and Elmwood Avenue, in the Town of Ellicott is closed due to flooding. This closure shall remain in effect until barricades are removed.

Kabob Road ,between Route 380 and Waterman Road, in the Town of Stockton is closed due to flooding. This closure shall remain in effect until the water recedes.

Ross Mills Road, between Route 380 and Gerry-Levant Road, in the Town of Ellicott is closed due to flooding. This closure shall remain in effect until the water recedes.

Free ice skating to be sponsored by Fredonia-Pomfret Rec. Dept.

The Fredonia-Pomfret Recreation Department will sponsor free ice skating for village and town children and their families in SUNY Fredonia’s Steele Hall during the winter season.

Ice skating will take place between 10:45 and 11:45 a.m. on the following dates: this Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday; Jan. 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 and 26; and Feb. 1, 2, 8 and 9.

The Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation has announced their Winter Social Media Webinar Series.

The Webinar Series is being offered to all non profit organizations and is free of charge.

The city of Dunkirk recycling center on Lucas Avenue will be closed on Saturday, Dec. 21 and Saturday, Dec. 28. The next curbside recycling pickup date is Monday, Dec. 30.

Fredonia Place will hold a baking contest for non-professional bakers today.

Baked goods must be dropped off before 1 p.m. There is a $5 entry fee. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

Red Cross responds to fire in Sheridan

Members of the Southwestern NY American Red Cross Disaster Team responded to provide disaster relief following a house fire at 3031 Whitaker Road in the town of Sheridan Sunday afternoon.

Disaster Team volunteer Mary Walker responded to provide initial disaster assistance for a family of three. Temporary housing, clothing and meals are services typically offered to address emergency needs.

The fire was apparently caused by a wood stove in the basement.

The local Red Cross chapter will continue working with the individuals and their recovery process if additional services or referrals are necessary.

All disaster assistance offered by the American Red Cross is complimentary and made possible by generous contributions from the American people and residents of Chautauqua County.

The American Red Cross is a United Way Community Partner.

Silver Creek holiday concert rescheduled

The Silver Creek High School holiday concert that was canceled due to inclement weather has been rescheduled for Thursday at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. It will be combined with the middle school concert.

SWCD to meet Thursday

The Chautauqua County Soil and Water Conservation District Director’s regular meeting will be held Thursday. The meeting will start at 10 a.m. at the Frank W. Bratt Ag Center, 3542 Turner Road, Jamestown.

Forestville holiday event rescheduled

The Forestville Christmas Parade and visit from Santa have been rescheduled for Saturday.

Parade lineup begins at noon and will start marching from the front of Forestville High School and end at the fire hall on Chestnut Street.

Santa will be waiting at the fire hall beginning at 1 p.m.

Fredonia Fire Department run report for October

The Fredonia Fire Department reported going on 150 runs in October, with 105 of those EMS/rescue runs, 20 false alarms, eight hazardous conditions, six good intent calls, five service calls, five fires and one explosion/rupture/overheat call.

Ninety of the calls were in the village, 30 were in the town of Pomfret, 23 were at SUNY Fredonia, four were mutual assistance calls and three were on the New York State Thruway.

Registration open for ice skating classes at Fredonia

Ice skating classes are being offered at SUNY Fredonia’s Steele Hall. Beginner skaters and advanced skaters are welcome. Classes run for 10 weeks, and there are two different series to choose from. Sunday afternoon classes at 1 p.m. start Jan. 5. Tuesday night classes at 6:15 p.m. start Jan. 14. The cost for each series is $90, with a recital at the classes’ conclusion. After another successful year at the Dunkirk’s waterfront, the city of Dunkirk is excited to announce that applications are being accepted for leasing opportunities at the Dunkirk Boardwalk Market. Due to inclement weather, The New Horizons Band Concert scheduled for Dec. 13 was canceled, and will not be rescheduled. The group will look forward to performing the music at future concerts.

Phone scam reported in area

An area resident is warning residents of a phone scam that she received at 7:20 Friday morning.

The caller told the resident he was with the Internal Revenue Service and that documents from recent years were in question that would lead to a payment.

The resident took down information and a phone number then passed it on to the Certified Public Accountant who handled the taxes in past years. The person who claimed to be with the IRS hung up the phone.

If residents receive calls from the IRS, be advised it is likely a scam. As always, they are encouraged to call the local police as well.

Silver Creek residents asked to make

appointments for water meter installations

The village of Silver Creek is in the process of installing new water meters.

Letters have been sent to residents that are involved in the replacement, asking them to make an appointment for installation.

This is a mandatory requirement and all residents need to make an appointment as soon as possible.

Installation can be done at the convenience of the resident with Saturday and Sunday installation available.

The water meters are being replaced as part of the Department of Environmental Conservation consent order for the wastewater treatment plant. The meters will also help give more accurate readings which could result in a savings for residents.

The Cassadaga Job Corps Academy will host an informational session and tour on its campus at 8115 Glasgow Road in Cassadaga on Thursday at 10 a.m.

The Academy will accept young adults, age 16-24, who are committed to a rigorous education and training program that are prepared to launch a career.

Red Knights Motor Cycle Club meets Wednesday

RRDC meeting today in City Hall

A meeting of the Roberts Road Development Corp-oration will be held today at 9 a.m. in Dunkirk City Hall in the second floor conference room.

RRDC was formed by Chautauqua County in 2009 to facilitate development of the former Roblin, Edge-wood, and Alumax properties adjacent to Roberts Road in the city of Dunkirk.

The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss potential development of the property, adopt a 2014 budget, and take other administrative action.

The meeting was originally scheduled to be held in November.

The winning raffle ticket for a king size Amish quilt donated to the Busti Historical Society by Linda Lewis of Frewsburg will be drawn at 7 p.m. at the Dec. 16 meeting of the Busti Buckaroos 4-H Club in the Busti Historical Society meeting room in the Museum next to the Busti Grist Mill.

The Buckaroos are the successor club to the Busti Shamrocks 4-H that initiated restoration of the Busti Grist Mill more than 40 years ago. All those who purchased or earned raffle tickets are welcome to attend the drawing.

Tickets are still available at the Sinclairville Free Library for an opportunity to win an original painting by local artist David Earl Miller. The piece was created by Miller during Sinclairville’s History Fair in September and donated by the artist to the library. It has been framed and measures 43″ by 30″. Gas prices rise

Average retail gasoline prices in New York have risen 0.9 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.62/g Sunday.

This compares with the national average that has fallen 0.7 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.24/g, according to gasoline price website NewYorkStateGasPrices.com.

Including the change in gas prices in New York during the past week, prices Sunday were 16.5 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 11.3 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The national average has increased 3.9 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 10.4 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

Informational meeting planned before Fredonia EXCEL vote

The Fredonia Central School District will hold a special public meeting Wednesday for community members to hear details of the EXCEL Building Project that is being proposed and will soon go before the voters. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the district auditorium.

Members of the community are encouraged to attend to hear details about the scope of work to be done through this project, and the project timeline, as well as have their individual questions answered.

Elementary Chorus concerts this week

The Fredonia Elementary Music Department will hold its annual Winter Concert Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. in the Fredonia Central Schools District Auditorium.

Musical selections will be performed by the third grade, fourth grade, and Select Chorus members.

There will be an additional concert performed by the second grade chorus students on Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the aud with a special appearance by the first grade chorus.

Dunkirk Fire Department run report

The Dunkirk Fire Department reports going on 175 runs in November, with 131 of those EMS runs which resulted in 45 transports to Brooks Memorial Hospital.

There were 19 still alarms, 16 box alarms and nine mutual aid calls the DFD answered, according to Chief Keith Ahlstrom.

Dunkirk tree lighting Friday afternoon

Dunkirk City Hall will host the annual tree lighting ceremony Friday. Events begin at 4:30 p.m. with a Santa’s Workshop that will run until 5:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room. At 5 p.m., Santa Claus will pay a visit followed by the tree lighting at 6 p.m. A raffle is included in the festivities, along with hot chocolate, coffee, donuts and prizes.

Christmas in Gowanda Friday evening

Christmas in Gowanda will be Friday with a kickoff at 6 p.m. in Chang Hu Park. where the tree lighting will take place. Christmas movies will be shown at the Hollywood Theater from 7 to 9 p.m. starting on every hour. Admission is free but a donation of a nonperishable food item for the Gowanda Food Pantry is encouraged.

Events from 6 to 9 p.m. will include children’s activities at Hollywood Theater front entrance, meet and greet with elected officials at the Persia Town Hall, Santa’s Reindeer on Main Street, a visit with Santa at Amish Collections and making ornaments at Jesse’s Toy Box. Story time with Santa’s elves will be held at the Gowanda Free Library.

Events will continue on Dec. 13 with the movies and children’s activities at the Hollywood Theater, story time at the library, Santa at Amish Collections and ornament decorating at Jesse’s Toy Box. On both Fridays, a shop local raffle can be won. The drawing will be held on Dec. 14 for a basket worth over $1,500 in prizes donated by local businesses. Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Catharine Young as the guest on Saturday’s television program. Senator Young serves the NYS 57th district. Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have risen 1.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.61/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has fallen 1.4 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.25/g.

Pomfret water district residents reminded to inform town of status

Town of Pomfret residents connecting to the North End Water District waterlines, including West Main Street, Route 60, East Main Street, McAllister Road, Wilson Road, Porter Road and Webster Road, are being advised that their outside and inside plumbing must be inspected and approved by the town in order to have their water turned on and a meter installed.

The installation will be performed by the North End Water District contractor, S. St. George Enterprises. Final connections are being made during this week and next.

Courses include: Micro-soft PowerPoint 2010, Part II, 6-8 p.m., Dec. 3 and 5 ($43); OSHA Hazard Communication Training for Supervisors, 8 a.m.-noon, Dec. 4 ($75); and OSHA Hazard Communi-cation “Right to Know” Training for Employees, 1-3 p.m., Dec. 4 ($35).

A point/insurance reduction course is offered from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Dec. 14. The fee is $35.

Pomfret ZBA public hearing to consider wind turbine

The Pomfret Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. in the town hall to consider a special use permit at 10277 Christy Road for the purpose of constructing a wind turbine, which will be used to generate power for agricultural on-site use.

Sheridan ZBA to hold public hearing Monday

The town of Sheridan’s Zoning Board of Appeals will hold a public hearing on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. in the town hall. The hearing will be regarding a special use permit at 2602 Route 5 for a home occupation to sell firearms, long guns only, from the residence.

Spoke Folk Holiday Bicycle Adoption event

The Spoke Folk Holiday Bicycle Adoption Event will be held Friday, Dec. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 819 Central Ave. in Fredonia. This annual pre-owned bicycle adoption event features men’s, women’s and children’s models. The bikes have been completely refurbished by the Spoke Folk volunteers, and are safe and ready to ride! Suggested donations and complete repair details will be provided for each bike, as will information about safe riding and proper maintenance. For more information, go to www.spokefolk.net.
