Fredonia’s Hillman Opera to offer

pre-performance talks

The Hillman Opera will present a pre-performance talk with the directors of this season’s presentation of “Summer and Smoke” before each of the four performances. The talk will be held an hour before every performance in the Costello Community Room, which is located in the Lake Shore Savings Gateway to the Arts Atrium outside the Marvel Theatre entrance. Performances dates and times are today and Saturday at 7:30 p.m and Sunday at 2 p.m. in Marvel Theatre at the State University of New York at Fredonia. Tickets are available through the Campus Ticket Office in the Williams Center, by phone at 716-673-3501 or online at fredonia.edu/tickets.

Chapter to meet on Sunday

Chapter 459 of the Vietnam Veterans of America will meet at 11 a.m. Sunday at the John T. Murray VFW Post No. 1017, 113 Deer St., Dunkirk.

SUNY groups plan Saturday food drive

Two Greek life organizations at SUNY Fredonia, Kappa Sigma and Sigma Kappa, will be hosting a canned food drive this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will take place in front of the Lake Shore Savings clock tower on the SUNY Fredonia campus. All non-perishable food food items will be accepted. Canned items are preferred. Members of both organizations will be able to collect donations directly from cars, if people don’t want to get out of their vehicles. If it rains, the location will be changed to the pavilion underneath the Rockefeller Arts Center.

Kappa Sigma President, Aidan Ceci, said, “We haven’t done this before and this will start the first of many annual Kappa Sigma and Sigma Kappa food drives.”

St. John’s United Church of Christ schedules Swiss steak dinner

St. John’s United Church of Christ, 733 Central Ave., Dunkirk, will hold a Swiss steak dinner on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The meal is $13 per dinner and includes dessert, Pre-ordering is strongly recommended. Call 716 366-0710 for reservations.

Little Valley Legion announces fund-raisers

LITTLE VALLEY — The Little Valley American Legion, 5899 NY-353, will hold two fund-raisers. Proceeds support the programs Santa in the Park (toys for kids) and Christmas fruit baskets for seniors. The public is welcome to both events.

On Saturday, there will be a vendor craft fair and bake sale at the Little Valley American Legion from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Saturday, Nov. 19, a meat raffle/basket raffle is scheduled at the Legion.

The Legion is taking donations of raffle baskets, new items and gift certificates for the upcoming basket raffle. Ticket sales for the raffle are from Nov. 14 to 19.

Rec Center opens Dec. 12

The City of Dunkirk’s Recreation Center at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds will open Monday, Dec. 12.

The Recreation Center will be open for four months again this season. Toddlers up to adults can enjoy everything from open gym, to soccer clinics, to birthday parties to a walking program. The Recreation Center has something for everyone.

For adults, AM Walk will continue on Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 to 10 a.m.

Walking is only $1 per day or a punch card with 14 walks for $10. Announcements will be made for future programming.

Residents can book a team’s practice, or a birthday party by contacting the Recreation offfice at 366-9885. Or they can stop into the office located at the City Hall Stearns Building, first Floor, 338 Central Ave., Dunkirk.
