Fredonia senior wins Cole scholarship

The Alissa Mari Cole Memorial Scholarship was again offered by the Cole family in memory of the impact she had as an exemplary inclusive and special education teacher in the education and lives of many children and their families. This year’s recipient is Fredonia High School graduate Gabriella Domenico. Like Alissa, Domenico is pursuing a career in childhood special education and will be attending SUNY Fredonia in the childhood inclusive and special education program this fall.

Sons of Legion meets Tuesday

Sons of the Legion Squadron 59 will be holding their monthly meeting, Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Post 59, 156 E. Main St., Fredonia. The Sons of the American Legion, is an organization made up of male descendants from veterans of World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Military Operations of Lebanon, Grenada, Panama and from the Persian Gulf War/War on Terrorism. Members support programs in Veterans Rehabilitation, Children and Youth, Student Scholarships and Community Affairs. Membership now numbers nearly 30,000 within the Detachment of New York with more than 350,00 members nationwide. Meetings are on the fourth Tuesday of month at Post 59 at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in joining, please feel free to stop by Post 59.

‘Guys and Dolls’ shows next week

The creative team at Main Street Studios proudly announces its upcoming production of “Guys and Dolls” at the Main Street Studios Warehouse Theatre in Fredonia.

Long hailed as a perfect musical, “Guys and Dolls” follows the escapades of gamblers Nathan Detroit and Sky Masterson. While Nathan is looking to set up the biggest craps game in New York, Sky is out to win the affection of Sarah Brown, a local missionary seeking to eradicate the evils of gaming and drink from her beloved city. Throw in Adelaide, Nathan’s showgirl fiancee of 14 years and you’ve got an oddball romantic comedy of the first order!

Originally premiered on Broadway in 1950, and having won a wide range of Tony, Drama Desk and Olivier awards, “Guys and Dolls” has stood the test of time and remains a classic of American Musical Theatre.

With a cast of some of Chautauqua County’s finest performers, “Guys and Dolls” promises to be an outstanding evening of community theatre! Showtimes are Thursday, June 29 and Friday, June 3 at 7:30, and Saturday, July 1 at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for students and senior, and can be purchased at www.mainstreetstudios.seatyourself.biz!

Radio service seeks volunteers

The Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service has served Western New York and Ontario, Canada for more than 36 years. The coverage and local volunteer readers throughout Ontario has grown steadily for a year.

Respite group offers support

WESTFIELD — Westfield Alzheimer’s Social Respite is a group of volunteers who on the second Wednesday of every month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the United Methodist Chruch at 101 E. Main St. The group offers a free respite for loved ones. There is one-to-one assistance with guests.

Throughout the time together, the group offers light exercise, painting table top, bowling, seasonal music, karaoke and bingo. They also provide a lunch and beverages.

Dedication set for new ball field name

CASSADAGA — On Sunday, June 25, immediately following the Pedro and the Smooth Cats concert on the Cassadaga Floating Stage, there will be a dedication of the newly named ball fields in Cassadaga – “Johnny Fesenden Ball Fields.”

The ball fields have been named in Johnny’s memory as he is remembered for teaching Cassadaga youth baseball fundamentals for many years. He secured funding for the Little League teams year after year. Fesenden was a proud World War II and Korean War Army veteran, a member and past Commander at American Legion Post 1280. He was an active member of the Cassadaga Community Baptist Church and Cassadaga Volunteer Fire Department. As a licensed electrician, he was a mentor for area young men training in this field. He was a merit badge counselor for the Boy Scouts and volunteered with projects at Camp Gross. Johnny will always be remembered for his generosity, energy and quick smile.

All are invited to this dedication which will take place at 7:15 p.m. at the new ball field sign on Maple Avenue, adjacent to the cemetery. There will be refreshments across the street at the American Legion Post 1280 immediately following (approximately 7:30 p.m.) All are invited.
